The wind model, though simple, is really quite good.  It seems, however, that it would be a fairly easy thing to add the ability to create timed or random gusts, and timed gusts with a random factor.  It would make things much more interesting.  For instance, today I experimented with wind while some poor fellow was trying to take off in a Spitfire.  I created a strong updraft, so he lifted off early.  Then, without warning, I got rid of it, and he plummeted down to a messy landing.  Great fun for everyone!

I usually keep a twelve mile per hour crosswind on in my server.  However, when I flew in reality, the wind was never steady but rather gusty.  My airplane would roll violently and sporadically in about 45 degrees in either dirction, as if someone were slapping my stick back and forth to annoy me.  It would be nice to have this sort of thing in the game, and since the wind model is already there it should be a simple task to add the ability to time the gusts.

Wind and weather make the game more interesting. Take some of the advantage out of bombing from high altitude. I guess gusts would make strafing and low altitude more difficult and give the vehicles a little edge. The same maps could be different every game, if these gusts and weather patterns could be made more random.

That's not necessarily true; Hitech has said no to engine management.  However, gusts would not be a huge hassle to program, I believe, which cannot be said about engine management.
