Let's give the USN a land based patrol/anti-maritime aircraft.

True but the plane played a major patrol/anti-maritime role for the USN, although it was less successful in the ETO with the Allied forces as a medium bomber.

Considering most of the fighters that were a threat were either unarmored or thinly armored, I would think a .303 would be adequate.
