It was October 4th 1943, the USS Ranger (CV-4) and its crew lurched off the shores of Bodo Norway in the Arctic circle.
A high priority Radar Communication installation awaited destruction by the aircrews of VB4. When the air group arrived
at the target they were astonished to find several troop carriers and cargo ships in Bodo Harbor as well. The German air
response was so completely unware and taken by surprised by the attack that the fighter interceptors were sent towards
the Russian border and never came in contact with the US Navy dive bomber group. The only German aircraft to come close
was a Ju88 that was shot down over the fleet. This historic snapshot records one of the very few operations where US Navy
pilots attacked German land based targets in the Arctic circle.
