Latest Patch Makes Joystick Useless
« on: August 01, 2009, 08:21:32 AM »
Downloaded newest patch...now, game doesn't recognize my joystick at all.

Can't fly--can't gv.

Can't play.

$15 bucks a month down the toilet.

ROX, instead of just writing a complaint with no detail, how about helping HTC help you?

Saying "this is broken" is kind of like giving someone a dart, putting a blindfold on, spinning them around 15 times and asking for a bullseye.

What kind of joystick? What are your computer specs? Care to share a DXDiag output? Those piece of information are important to getting assistance. Gives a "starting point" for the staff at HTC to figure out where to even begin.

My guess?

Your computer has Vista on it and you have the game installed the old "Program Files" default directory.  All that has happened it Vista has created a new virtual store of files due to the new executable for the new version of the game, or you were not running the game as administrator and now you are.

To get rid of the above problems, get the game out of the "Program Files" folder.  We have been preaching this for long time now.  Seeing as you are probably starting over with your configuration, you might as well take this oppertunity to grab the full version of the game and install it.  It no longer default to installing in the "Program Files" folder and will solve installation issues permanently.

You will still have to re-configure your stick and all your settings, but you are going to have to do that anyway.  You can thank Microsoft for this one.

Skuzzy,

Does that hold true for XP as well, or only Vista?

Also, is it not possible to copy the settings files from the old install into the new one?

Vista and Windows 7.

Yes, you can copy the "settings" files from one to the other, but you have to find them first.  This is the single biggest reason to get any application out of the "Program Files" folder.

Of course, when the industry has moved, en masse, from the "Program Files" folder we fully expect Microsoft to extend the atrocious grasp of UAC beyond the "Program Files" folder.  They seem bent on stopping users from being able to have any direct control over their own computer systems.

Come on Skuzzy, you've worked support how long? You have to admit, locking users out of direct control of their own computer systems DOES have it's good points.  :lol

Joking aside, it's not like it's just Windows that does that, and in fact, I'd say Microsoft was late to the party. MacOSX has been doing it for years (albiet a bit less intrusive), and Linux has also done it for a long time with the Sudo command. Heck, even Cisco attempted to create a piece of software that was implemented by a not insignificant number of corporations called Cisco Security Agent that was basically UAC for XP before UAC and Vista came out. I think the BIGGEST problem with UAC is that unlike Sudo, it tries a little too hard to be secure and just becomes damn annoying.

Actually, only certain distros of Linux do it.  Check Slackware.  Solaris is also free of this nonsense.

UAC does absolutely nothing for the end user, but make them frustrated.  It also compounds support problems as now we cannot tell an end user how to easily remove a config file or how to easily copy the "settings" folder from one place to another.  It renders a good chunk of documentation completely useless.  This applies to many applications, not just ours.
