tool for filmviewer
« on: August 08, 2009, 01:51:13 PM »
Was thinking about a possible training tool to include with the filmviewer. A big part of this came from Agent's narrated films explaining throttle, stick, and rudder inputs.

I remember when I first started in AH I had some trouble figuring out how and of what inputs to perform ACM's, especially throttle timing. Right now the filmviewer doesn't show any of those inputs except flaps and even still showing the stick and pedals moving would prove to be very difficult in getting the person watching to understand the when part since they would have to be looking down into the cockpit to see those anyway.

To my point now:

How about some indicators at the top of the viewer to show those inputs? They would move with the inputs and would always be in front of your face no matter what direction you were looking in FV. Maybe even make it a selectable option so that it would not be there for the movie makers. Of course this most likely would be able to show what the other planes in the filmviewer were doing even if watching from pov but would make all those training films a little more helpful IMO.

Here is an example of what I am talking about, a little rough but I think you can get an idea of what I talking about.

edit: sorry image not real clear far left is throttle, right verticle box is elevator, top horizontal is aileron, and bottom is rudder, all with the indicator showing position of input.

Good idea, could be a huge help if you had for example someone doing a split S showing not only the maneuver on film, but his control inputs also.

I think the indicators are a most excellent idea and not only new players could greatly benefit from it.

An AoA indicator would prove useful to some as well.

Nice idea!

You'd probably only be able to record your own local inputs, as the control inputs of the other planes are not transmitted over the net.  Even so, I agree, it would be a valuable teaching tool.

This is true but you could ask the guy to send you his film if he recorded it and then you would know how he did it.

As a side note I also got to thinking that a flaps indicator would be helpful too.

I think another thing that would be helpful is to have an icon over your plane.

This way when you are watching from another planes POV it will be much easier to keep watching your plane in relation to their's. Sometimes I do have trouble following my own plane especially when there is little separation.
