The Man who Downed Nowotny

September 2002 Aviation History featured a story of 1st Lt. Edward R. Haydon who was instrumental in the downing of 258 victory aces Major Walter Nowotny who was flying a Me-262 November 8th 1944. “The jet pilot was good. He knew what he was doing. In case he had anyone on his tail, he would lure them into the flak zone, so he could drop to the flak-free zone and land. No one would have voluntarily flown through that to get down to the jet. But see, I was already below this height at his level and made the turn. I still had plenty of speed, and I thought for sure I would never see the jet again. I turned no more than 20 to 50 degrees, because I was receiving no fire, and rolled level. I was just trying to scoot across the field and either find a place to hid or rejoin the group. Well, directly in front of me appeared this 262 again, slowing down as if on a downwind leg, 180 degrees from his previous position and he did not see me. I chopped the throttle, cutting power, sliding back to the right a bit. Remember that when you cut power on a propeller-driven plane, you lose speed quickly. I ended up in the perfect position, and let her drift right into him, just like shooting a student out of the traffic pattern.”- 1st Lt. Edward R. Haydon

Arena
SEA

Country Percentages
Allied - 50% of attendees
Axis - 50% of attendees

Units:
Allies:
P-51D – 100%

Orders:
Roll A75 and perform a fighter sweep of A29

Restrictions:
ALT cap of 15k until enemy is spotted.

Units:
Axis:
Me 262 – 100%

Orders:
Axis C.O. is to designate “one” pilot to be Nowotny. Roll A29 and divide into 2 flights. Half the Axis pilots are to circle the field (A29) below 2k. The other half is to CAP the field at 15k. Nowotny pilot is to be one of the lower flights.

Restrictions:
Both flights must stay near very near A29 (within 10 miles, Radar ring) till the enemy is spotted. Bottom flight cap of 2k till enemy is spotted. Top flight cap of 15k till enemy is spotted

Victory Conditions
If Allies shoot down pilot designated Nowotny, automatic victory for Allies. If not then conditions are based on Standard SEA point’s values.
P-51D - 15 points
Me262 - 20 points

Arena Settings
1. Terrain - Rhine
2. Icon Range - Short
3. Wind - East @ 10kts 2k - 12k
4. Time -10:00 x1
5. Fighter & Bomber Warning Range – 52,800 (about 10 Miles)
6. Enemy Collisions - On
7. External view for bombers (F3) - on
8. Visibility - 10 miles
9. Friendly Collisions - off
10. Fuel - 1.5
11. Ack - 0.5
12. Kill shooter - off
13. Tower Range – 52,800 (for display to aid players, set to match above setting)
14. Radar - Dar bar only above 1000'

Designer Notes
To save flying time allied pilots will roll from A75.
LW should certainly make use of friendly ack; this is especially true for lower Me 262 flight. Given time CM may have a second frame so some may switch sides or flights. Substituting Rhine map for Germany map.

CM Notes
All fields East of the Rhine should be Axis.

History wasn't repeated this time.  Great job all who flew with me.  Had a lotta fun with this event but I'd suggest one change.  2k Alt cap for low axis group should be 2k AGL as 2k isn't even possible for a good portion of the radar ring around A29, as the ground is above 2k alt for much of it.

just a suggestion: The scenario called for equivelent sides "50/50", however the first frame had 34 -P51 and 48-ME262's. It was pretty lopsided. I would suggest that the snapshot boss hold flights until sides balance more evenly to the script.

<S> Thanks, it was another fun scenario.

Fun Fight!   I have to say that being out numbered by 262's was a blast.  (Even if I did run like a girl at the end)  <S> BLUEBLUD

Enjoyed the snapshot. As promised I took a pic of the 262's that landed safely at the end of the second hop.

Texas20,

Admittedly sir, I did the same thing. Except I would turn really hard every now and again to scream at those bad old 262's to scare them away. Big Grin Hehe!
