Trying to come back to AH - but computer rebelling
« on: December 12, 2010, 03:42:42 PM »
After several years away, trying to come back to the game. When left in ~2008, AH2 was running fine. Of course, multiple version updates - and switch to Miles sound system - have intervened. When I reloaded and tried again, started having serious problems.

The game will load up fine, and I've made it to the tower - and even gone to runway - without problems. However, after several minutes the screen will freeze and windows goes into an unrecoverable hard lock. Can't get to task manager, can't operate windows/u/u keystrokes to blindly shut down. Only way out is to hold the power button down till powers off. And I HATE having to do that!

Each time there's been a hard lock, there's been some kind of sound running, for what it's worth. The screen continues to show uncorrupted video, and the sound that was last running will continue to play (or loop). Just nothing else works.

For what it's worth, the desktop has not had any other problems with any other software. However, the most aggressive game its been used for in the last several years has been Bejeweled on Facebook. (My daughter took over the machine....)

The drivers are final retail as far as I can tell.

I'll post my DxDiag next.

i got a test for you,

when i was running SB i had multiple conflicts and issues with AH so now when i load the game i disable the services for SB and i no longer have the issues you are now having.

do you know how to disable services?

i use a program to shut a buch of things off when i load the game, but you can test this by manually shutting off the SB services and then playing the game to see if it is where you conflicts are arissing.

Yeah, I'll try that. Will go to hardware devices and deactivate SB, use on board for sound...pretty sure my mobo has sound but no video... (and not the other way around..)  ;)

even if you disable the card itself make sure you turn off the services for its programs.

also make sure that you DO NOT disable windows audio! i found out the hard way that even with another sound board and drivers installed that AH must have windows audio active in order to run.

Went to what should have been on board audio, but there were no sounds available. Looked like the onboard chipset was working, and the user control panel looked OK, but no sounds till I reactivated the SB. Then on a hunch made sure the onboard Realtek was shut down, and let SB do its thing - had a hard lock again.

I'm done for the day. So far invested about 4 hours over last two days, between configs and TIR and stick settings....but not made it off end of the runway. Sigh.

And - lol - discovered my CH pedals likely need a new potentiometer, with massive jumps in the center setting. And something is very odd with the X52 joystick, as even recalibrated my plane immediately begins rolling to the left slowly and continues despite efforts to stabilize or reverse the roll.

The gods of AH are sending me a message, methinks...

restart the realtek and shutdown the SB. make sure you plug your speakers and mic into the onboard plugs and not into the SB cards. when you shut it off your sound is now coming from the MB not through the card.

good luck with all of your griefers, hope to see you in the air soon!

Disabling a sound device, without removing the drivers and all associated software is not going to gain you much due to how Windows polls all interrupt routines when an interrupt occurs.

That needs to be addressed before anything else can.

Roger that. Will hit that problem first, and take things from there.

What puzzled me was that I had no problems at all with this exact same setup when playing AH2 from 2004 - 2008. Suspect the new sound system uncovered latent conflicts...

Update - and thanks Skuzzy et al for the help.

Well, turns out the problem wasn't just the SB card. Still had problems after physically removing that and the drivers - turned out the Realtek drivers had been corrupted. When I reinstalled the same drivers, problem disappeared.

Which left the controller problem. After some test flights and calibration tweaking, the solution became obvious. Turns out, it can be confusing to fly when the elevators are mapped to the airelon axis and vice versa.  :lol

Now trying to get couple other issues resolved, including a temperature management problem that's just cropped up. Couple years' worth of dust apparently can have a deleterious effect on thermal performance....
