PBY Request
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:29:52 AM »
I would like to see a renewed effort to move a PBY into the lineup.

We need another method of dropping supplies, troops, and just plain marking GVs without ordnance for normal gameplay and especially scenarios. Of course, a Piper Cub might fit that bill as a spotter!   :rofl

Since it can land and takeoff from land or sea, it would be a perfect candidate for my next Wishlist Thread....
Air/Sea Rescue Operations.

Thank you in advance for the consideration. (and a place to voice my request) It really is apppreciated.

The PBY was not a troop transport, nor a cargo plane.   While there was a troop transport version of the H8K, it was not capable of paratroop drops so far as I know.

The PBY would be a sitting duck in AH.  The Sunderland would be scarcely any better.

The only flying boat that would have any survivability in AH would be the H8K2 "Emily".

While the PBY was not a troop transport, PBYs were used to drop special forces units behind enemy lines and could easily carry the 10 troops needed in AH to capture towns.

the sunderland held it's own on several instances. the only one i can think of off the top of my head is when some sunderland shot down at least 2 atacking enemy fighters. and i might be wrong on this point, but wasnt the H8K2 basically a structural knock-off of the sunderland? sure, they changed the guns around a bit, adding a 20mm and what not, but other than that, they're pretty close to the same, no?

No, the H8K2 was, by far, the best flying boat of WWII and was designed from the ground up by Kawanishi, having no relationship to the Short design at all.

I simply do not understand why, even 70 years later, people still insist on thinking the Japanese just copied other country's designs and didn't design their own despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

I would say because some people think they look similar but I won't even go that far. It's because, for some people, they are big flying boats so they must be the same.

My favorite so far is B-29--> Tu-4 (an actual clone)--> Tu-95 Bear.

All I can figure is the Tu-2 and Tu-95 are both Soviet, are both silver color, and both have four engines.

Perhaps, but it is more than just that.  My mom gave me a aviation DVD set for Christmas one year and in the included booklet it claims that the A6M 'Zero' was designed by Howard Hughes.  No mention of that Jiro Horikoshi guy who actually designed it, just a false claim that it was designed by Hughes.

As to the H8K, Sunderland and other big flying boats, the hull forms available are rather limited, so it is not surprising that they look similar.

hehehe Thanks Drone!  I knew when I searched the PBY on Google I would be open to a challenge. You are correct but I was more interested in the actual profile! :) Thanks for clarifying my error!

I can also think of many applications in Scenarios where it might be used.

Just as a point of order, I had no trouble at all finding plenty of genuine PBY pics on Google Image search when I just searched for "PBY...."

That said, while the Cat wouldn't have a major impact on the Mains I'd still love to see her. A Black Cat variant could be fun, especially in FSO/Scenario play where night-time anti-shipping raids are possible.

For the Record, I liked the black and white image and the fact it was on the wheels on land.

I will second the PBY request.   It is no more a siting duck than a C47.  Heck it was at least armed.  The Black Cats even had a field variant that had quad fifties mounted in the nose under that turret.  They were mounted slightly downward so the pilot didn't have to now down towards the ground to strafe stuff at night.
But the real value of the Cat would be to reinvision night ops with all the clicks and whistles that were available in WWII.  It would be cool to have Icon ranges at night reduced to like 100 yards or so, which I think is pretty close to visual range for gun solutions at night, ( I could be way off here so something more appropriate would work for me fine ).  It would be nice to have an F6 screen for night bombers that was a monocrome radar display, or have to illuminate targets with firebombs to bomb accurately at night.  The Night Game has never really been purued.  It is possible that to make it work a seperate NigthOps arena might need to be set up.  That might be cool indeed.

But even without all that, I would really love to fly a catalina.  It was just a beautiful airplane.

we'll just throw some torpedos on a Dr.1

PBY and Dr.1 fly about the same speed.only the PBY is a bigger, easyer target.
