The Supermarine 224 was completely unrelated
Not COMPLETELY unrelated ... It was part of the design series that streched from the S6b Schnyder Cup race plane (world record 1929 407mph). To the Spit 1 ... I suspect it's the famous S6b That DW was refering to ... NOT AT ALL a spitfire at that stage, but it's ancestor ... The knowledge gained from building it's successors eventually DID lead to the Spitfire 1 -AND- The RR Merlin Engine.
The Original ME 209 -DID- set a world record at 469 MPH, but that was 10 years later in 1939. Quite a bit slower than a 262. The Nazis attempted to capitalize on the record by associating the plane with the ME109 fighter (which was actually an EARLIER design). Interestingly, the 209s Speed Record STOOD (for piston engine aircraft) for 30 years and wasn't beaten until 1969, by a highly modified F8F Bearcat. Also interestingly ... the DO-335 (which I THINK may be what David was refering to?) was tested at 474 MPH, but never underwent the official speed trials required for a World Record (due to the confusion as the war ended.)
SOME people need to lighten up a tad I'd say ?
