970 and AH3
« on: June 07, 2016, 07:23:55 AM »
Currently I am running a nvidia 760, looking to upgrade but don't have the $$$ for the 1000 series.  Would the 970 be enough to run AH3 with most of the eye candy.  PC has an i7 3.5ghz with 16 gigs ram.

Yes. The 970 gives the best bang for the buck.

Unless you're going to use either 4K, 144Hz or triple monitors. Or worse, all of them.

Am I missing something? It appears the 970 is a $300+ card and the 1070, which is supposedly very much faster will be $379. At only 20-25% more won't the 1070 be the best bang for the buck? Don't get me wrong Bizman, you are obviously much more knowledgeable than I am. I am planning to upgrade from my Radeon 9650 so I want to be sure I make the right choice.

Condor, you're right. I read the original post a little sloppily and thought he already had the 970. Further, I haven't yet familiarized with the 1000 series cards more than what I've read on this forum. For what I know they aren't widely available yet.

Most likely the 1070 will be the best bang for the buck especially if the price comes closer to the 970.

As has been said several times, the "tens" tell the relative performance level in the GTX generation in question. Thus the 770 Semp mentioned was fine for quite a while, the 970 does equally well with newer games and the 1070 will run most games of the rest of this decade without major issues.

Well if it's only a little more then I might have to go fo it.  When I was looking earlier I only saw the 1080, the 1070 is supposed to be released the 10th.

But the prices of the 970 will fall when the 1070 is more widely available, won't they?

I see Newegg has a mail-in rebate on eVGA's GTX 970, bringing the price down to $279.  That's $100 less than the 1070 at $379.

Oboe, you're right too. Now we're at philosophical questions: Whose right is more right? How much is much? How much is enough? How good is good?

There is wisdom not to get the flagship model of any component: The last 5% of performance will double the price. The same can be said about getting the latest model versus the previous equivalent. The price jump isn't as drastic, but it's serious money nevertheless.

The most important thing is to get what satisfies one's needs. For AH3 played at the resolution of 1920x1080 the 970 should do more than fine so if the price gap is more than let's say 25% the price difference would be more than the performance difference.

The option of the 970 interests me if it will run AH3 at default settings for $100 less than a 1070 but when I compared the specs for 5 randomly selected EVGA and MSI cards I found that they are not the same with respect to things like core clock speeds (1050-1216MHz) and boost clock speeds (1050-1363MHZ). I assume for each more is better but will it make a observable difference?

It's been said that a regular user can't notice any difference below 20% of more or less nominal power. The study was made about processors but I believe that can be generalized to apply video cards as well.

That said, the fastest card from a single reputable maker for a certain price sounds to me the most tempting. Or the one that has gained a reputation of having the best build quality/best service/best warranty again for the same certain price.

please note,
are you running with PCIe 2.0 slots in your mobo?
I am, put in a 970, which is pcie 3.0, works great.
I mention this because a 2.0 slot might show affects with the new 1080's which will be 3.0.......................... ..

just a thought.

Oboe, the new and especially used market for 970 will be very attractive next month.  Even now I've seen good 970 cards go for 150$ USD here in Canada, and there are PILES of them for sale on various hardware/gaming forums up here, lots of opportunity to make offers and get even better deals.  970 IMO for the purposes of this game, and many others, will suffice and then some for years still.  Bonus is for another bit of $, the 1070 will let you run everything out there at max and expect longevity for quite a while.
