Ah.. would you really want to simulate the actual Kasserine battle in Tunsia? You know, the one where the Allies driving terrible tanks with weak armor and pathetic guns went up against hull down Axis in much, much better tanks with strong armor and powerful guns, and were, unsurprisingly, decimated. That does not sound like a fun night.
Your own post points out the dilemma: historically accurate and people complain about imbalance, non-historically accurate and someone complains about, well, being historically inaccurate. Having the same tanks on both sides is a compromise to give everyone a chance. However, you're right, it does sort of go against the raison-d-etre of the AvA, but a person that is told to go up against a Tiger I or Panther in his Sherman 75mm is probably not inclined to come back. Case in point: the battle of Kursk was won by the Russians. All they had were T34/76s and they were going up against Panzer IVs, Panthers, and Tiger Is. Go offline in AH, set the drones to be tanks, including the Tiger I, and try to kill a Tiger I with a T34/76. It's nearly impossible against frontal armor, and with AHs tank radar on you're nearly always going to be going up against frontal armor because you target knows you're there and are coming for him. Now it's true the Axis had way more Panzer IVs at Kursk than Panthers or Tiger Is but you can't do that in AH. There is no way to limit the number of a particular type of tank that can be in use at once: it's just available in infinite amounts or not available at all. (Possible Wish List item??)
Trying to insure balance and keep everybody happy and having a good time is a difficult job that involves trade-offs.
