FYI about Laptops for AHII
« on: March 25, 2008, 06:52:54 PM »
I just wanted to give my .02 cents about laptops - MAKE SURE THE SYSTEM YOU BUY CAN HANDLE THE GAME'S REQUIREMENTS!
I am running a Dell XPS system (when new - was awsome), but as the game evolved - my computer became strained.  I chose to go the cheap route and upgrade my memory to 2G, which the system's standard Vid card would pull from - NOT THE WAY TO GO! :cry  Do yourself a favor, spend the extra $$$ and get the upgraded Vid card.  As we continue to play, the more powerful our systems have to be.  As for laptop owners - upgrading can be very costly if not impossible, you are stuck with what you paid for.  I have seen on 200, some players talking about getting laptops - my only reply is to spend the money, you'll need it!  Skuzzy has helped me, but for the most part - I am doomed to fly with packet-loss/warping & disco's.  To all my fellow players, I am sorry - I just hope I win the lottery so I can afford a better system :salute

I can agree with some of your points but not all of them.  I have a Dell Insiron 1300 laptop that I just recently upgraded to 2 gigs of memory.  The recent patch has forced me to turn some of the detail sliders down a bit to maintane my framerate, but I still find the game very playable.  That is also including all the other junk going on with the wife's zune software idling and my antivirus software and dozens of other (60!) processes running.  But then I remember Air Warrior 1.5 that displayed a mountain as a big brown pyramid.  I only need minimal graphics to enjoy a good game and even the best graphics won't help a bad one so I'm not really driven for graphics performance.  My biggest problem is the lousy wi-fi connection I use to connect through the city-wide network.  Someday though,  I will build a monster that will kick down my door, jump on the desk and dare me to play....

Oh, don't get me wrong - the game is still very enjoyable to play.  Even though I get fustrated and want to put a bullet in my laptop - I would suggest that anyone looking into a laptop and wanting to play (100% of the time as I do) to be carefule about how they chose to spend their money.  Personally, I would not stick with the standard Vid card.  As all games progress you will need the power of an upgraded card.

My advice to everyone has always been: If you don't absolutely need a laptop - don't get one for gaming. If you need a laptop, get a small and light one which is portable enough to be useful and build a desktop with big screen / good performance for gaming instead.

I would love to be able to change the video chips in this thing...
