BACKROUND:

By the mid-1930s, the U.S. Navy needed to replace its biplane fighters with a more modern aircraft. After a competition among several manufacturers, the entry from the fledgling Brewster Aeronautical Corp. of Queens, New York, was chosen.
Designed by Dayton Brown, the F2A-1 was an all-metal monoplane with retractable landing gear and (for the time) exceptional pilot visibility
Following an order for 54 aircraft, the Brewster F2A-1 began to enter squadron service with the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1939.

The 25 aircraft of VMF-221 took off at 0600, 4 June 1942, to intercept a Japanese air raid. The squadron consisted of regular USMC pilots and new USMCR pilots. The green 2nd Lt.s were usually wingmen to regular pilots. Tactically the squadron was divided into five divisions that operated independently.

The Battle of Midway was about to start.

well, just think about you altitude, overall strategy, why didn't came in zekes from E at 22k, while came in from W with b5n just 5 minutes later, just to drag ALL brewster away from the base.
95% of the zekes came in at 8-10k. Sudden death was the result  Wink

Hectic battle. My group of 4 first encountered 15 Zekes co-alt 18K. About 8 of them stayed and fought us all the way to the deck. We got two of them, but eventually all but me was shot down, so I ran like a little girl back to Midway, where I finally saw other friendlies. After that we outnumbered the enemy whenever he showed up, so it was more of a fight against the other friendlies, trying to get the kills first. Personal tally was 4 kills, without rearming. I even had bullets left in nose guns Smiley

It wasn't really about the tactics, but sheer numbers that caused this. 52 vs 44, when they also had to have people pilot gunless bombers, wasn't balanced enough. But still had fun.

Well Zekes were going to be outnumberd even if the balance was 60 vs 40. Since 40% of the 60 should have been B5ns So that leaves 36? Zekes. Sure not a big deal but it is always easier to defend in this kind of senario.   And not having a clue how the A6m2 would do against a Brewster did not help  Hehe!

I was leading the allies.  I recruited silent6 as my second in command --and he was tremendously helpful in keeping everyone organized.  My plan was to stagger our forces from 2500 to 15k, keeping all in groups of two with 1.5k of space between wingmen, circling the base 5 miles or so off the reef.  We were able to keep good communication for the most part,( the only problem was a lack of targets with some unfortunate incidence of friendly fire) which enabled us to find and eliminate the threats quickly, while sustaining a min amount of damage.

The flight capabilities of the Brewster along with the poor armor of the Japanese bombers and fighters, gave us a clear advantage in this one.  I think the main problem that the Japanese had was their initial altitude, they were not able to  compete with the dive speed able to be achieved by the Brewster causing them many casualties. --speed kills-- XD!

I think a great time was had by all, I finish with 3 kills and 4 assists I believe, most others had comparable success.

thanks all look forward to the next one. <<S>>
