“OPERATION THUNDERCLAP” The Channel Dash
February 1942. For nearly a year the french Port of Brest has been the home of the two battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, where they had arrived on March 18th 1941 after sinking 116.000 BRT of british shipping. Having travelled 18.000 nautical miles, extensive repairs were necessary to the ships and engines. Their stay was further lengthened by several hits from british aircraft, which several times damaged the ships and kept them in the docks.
The ships received orders to ready themselves for a night battle exercise. Only after they were leaving port were the crew informed of the plan to break through the channel. The weather was wet and windy.
While the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and Prinz Eugen sailed through the English Channel bringing with them what could have been one of the biggest air battles that could match near Dieppe. Information from a British Agent gave the British a great advantage yet, indecisions and disagreements between the many RAF Commands cost what would have been one of the biggest victories in WWII. Fighter escorts missed Escort Times, groups went in w/o fighter cover and the Luftwaffe went into action.
All three of the German ships made it past the English with little damage due to their escort ships and Luftwaffe. But it could been very different this time round!

<S> All,
Unfortunately, due to RL issues, I am unable to attend the first frame... I'll do my best to attend 2nd and 3rd frames, I just love fighting over the Channel!
<S> All, and good-luck!

Looking forward to flying with or against you in the last two frames. <S> Sparow is a good chap to have around, having known him since I was hosting the AvA, it's good to have him participating in the SEC. <S>
