He works in 1:16 scale, not 1:48. Astounding patience and workmanship too, those models of his deserve a place of honour in any exhibition.

Way too much detail... ...that is a lot of aluminum and are those brass fittings in there?   

I'd try it in wood but never metal...that is a lot of work.

he was a dentist, they are used to working in small scale, as part of their training they have to carve tiny animals and stuff using their dental drills.
