I don't know myself, but it would be a welcome splash of color to those otherwise boring late-war USN paint schemes!

I just wish the USN was more imaginative!

This F6F may fit the bill then. Not only a red nose it was an MTO aircraft with German kills to it's credit a little unusual for a US F6F.
