Virtual Reality Headgear!
« on: May 12, 2011, 04:23:07 PM »
So does anyone have any luck with any of this stuff?  I am looking at getting some VR Headgear
looks like for decent resolution the price starts around $10,500.  I was reading some reviews and I tried changing
my monitor resolution to 800x600 and I don't believe that is an "acceptable" resolution for combat.  Has anyone tried any of these
headgear setups? How well do you think it would work with AHII?

Not sure about make/model, but yes some folks have used 3D glasses like that with monitors in them.

I honestly don't know how the resolution looks or how they get around the lo-res nature of the screens. I'll leave that up to somebody that can answer first-hand.

Vulcan is the one you want to speak to, he uses a set or at least used to.

Ya I think he just upgraded his in the past couple of months. If I remember right he didn't spend anywhere near that for his set.

Think about that resolution in a size of a stamp. The pixels are tiny! And they are right in front of your eyes covering your main focus without any image stretching on the side caused by the limits of DirextX. You can turn your head about 180 degrees horizontally, which easily compares to a half circle monitor with thousands of pixels. Twist your waist and you'll be able to look behind you. You can also nod or look up, always having the same picture quality. The only thing that doesn't work like IRL is, that the goggles don't understand eye movements as commands to change focus.

Oh, and it may look funny: A fellow used a pair of them and he looked like a white hillbilly Stevie Wonder...

Does it have motion tracking built in? Or is it just a view, and you have to set up TIR or something to accomodate motion via a secondary effort?

I use an Emagin Z800. I've been using it for about 5 years with Aces High. It has dual 800x600 OLED that give you the feeling of looking at a 21" monitor from about 2 feet away. It has 3 axis head tracking (aka 3DoF). There is a driver for it to emulate TrackIR. I set my tracking up to about 1:1.3 ratio (ie if I move my head 60 degres to the left or right = 90 degree left or right view)

Sure the 800x600 is a bit of a loss, but you gain in immersion and stereo 3D. And in knife fights stereo 3D can give you a good advantage in understanding relative E (you get a better feel for what is going on).

Also as above 800x600 in a VR headset is difficult to compare to a big hi res monitor. Your eye only focus's on a narrow field (6 degrees IIRC). Imagine this, you are reading this text... now you want to read the text at the top of the screen, you either move your eyes or head to focus there. So if you have head tracking you're doing the equivalent of looking at a small section of the monitor then moving your head to look at another part. You cannot easily compare the resolution 1:1 because of this (sorry if it's confusing, it's hard to explain and late for me).

The new unit I have my eyes on is this: http://www.vuzix.com/consumer/products_wrap_1200vr.html  . It is supposed to have 6DoF tracking, plus independent diopter adjustment and the res looks good too.

AH with VR is a quite awesome experience, but VR is not for everyone (especially if you suffer motion sickness)

Oh it cost me us$599 for mine. I also have zoom mapped to a rotatory on my X45 throttle, and I use the X45 'rocker'/rudder on the thottle as lean left/right. The only caveat for me is I'm left eye dominant so the the reflector sight is not center, so I need to adjust my aim (aim for the left wing and I hit fusalage).

Thx Vulcan I hadn't seen the 1200VR yet.  I did all this comparison checking and didn't even go to there website.  I will check it out, I don't believe the motion sickness will be a problem I've been using Full Motion Level D sim at Flight Safety for the last couple of weeks so thats not a problem. On a side note lol, me and the sim techs got to talking about AHII, and he checked into it and found out that it wouldn't be that big of a deal to run AHII in there 26million dollar Full Motion Simulator, lol.  He said the motion wouldn't work yet cuz there was no coding yet for the Six axis hydraulic platform but he did say it would definetly work in FTD mode.  I told him I didn't think I could affort the $437 dollar an hour price tag to play AHII though, heh.  Thanks again for the info.
