Congrats on being related to one of the worst presidents in history.  Hehe!

He is related to Jimmy Carter?

I know a guy named Jimmy Carter. He introduces himself like "Hi, I'm Jimmy Carter. No relation."

Go back a thousand years or so and you're equally related to an awful lot of people. Quite a lot of kings in that list, too many if you ask me. I think more realistically most of us are related to an obscure peasant somewhere in Eastern Europe.

There is an Irish king, Niall of the Nine Hostages 1500 years back whose DNA is carried by millions of people all over the world. He had a lot of kids apparently. Anywhere the Irish went but particularly prevalent in the North west of Ireland. Which as it happens is where my maternal Grandfather came from. So I may indeed be related to a King. But our family have trouble figuring out what happened to our paternal Grandfather who was a sailor and disappeared mysteriously sometime in the thirties. If we can't figure that one out, what chance do we have going back a thousand years?

On the other hand a legendry warrior who shares my surname was killed at the Battle of Clontarf way back in 1014! Given how few people have that name. There has to be a connection.

I'm related to "Dashing" Jack O'reardon.

He was a lady's man and gambler.

Poor "Dashing" Jack, they found him floating in the Chicago River with a knife in his back.

That's as famous as it gets for me. Some guy that made the papers... in the obits.

I know my great grandmother and her sister came over from county Clare Ireland when they were both really young. I don't know much about my fathers side past the civil war.

I need to delve into my Irish history, its a little hard living in the states though. I do know that one of my Uncles was executed by the Brits  uhoh .  My dad did say our family name (O'Conghaile) carries some respect though
O'Conghaille = Connolly, quite a common name. But could you be related to the famous James Connolly one of the leaders of the 1916 rising, who was executed by the British in even though he was dying of wounds anyway? Or is that family legend? He's pretty famous.

The Brits didn't actually execute that many people. In fact the Irish executed more Irishmen in the civil war that followed than the British ever did. I'm afraid I spoiled my wife's cherished family story about their Grandad. Apparently he often told the tale of how he sat in his cell in prison and saw his friends being taken away and shot by the merciless Brits. Interested, I researched it and discovered that in fact he was probably on the losing side of the civil war as were his friends and they were executed by the merciless Irish army WHOA!

Here's a website which lists a lot of people who died or were executed in one form or other at the time.
Maybe he's in there somewhere.

Guess which city I'm living in right now?   Thumbs UP! Just two minutes from Galway Bay! Originally from Dublin though.

Well you should be able to trace what actually happened to your uncle. The events of the time are well documented. It could be very interesting.
