There is a great story of a B24... look up "lady be good" I think when down in the same Sahara...couple of books out on it great reads.

The  British pilot survived the ditched plane but would have had a 200 mile walk in the desert to reach safety.
One article says he tried to fix the plane.  I doubt that.   I think he dismantled parts of the plane in search of fluid.
