“There are a lot of privately owned aircrafts flying in and out of this airport daily. It’s not unusual to see a crash,” he said.

wow.........I consider aircrafts crashing to be completely unusual.

Wealthy guy just learned to fly... Buys a P-51D. Has just a handful of time in Mustang, no solo time. Not sure if instructor has any warbird time. Took off from Durango runway 5. Whatever happened, the Mustang crashed on rt 309, about 300 yards from runway end.

Common problem in warbird community... Heaps of cash can buy a warbird. It doesn't buy the time and experience needed to fly it safely. Too many "well to do" guys have bought aircraft well beyond their level, and some also paid for it with their lives. Tragic and unnecessary. Two families are grieving.

P-51s can be rebuilt, literally from the data plate... Can't rebuild people.
My regards,

He was probably trying to run...

Condolences. The eralier assessment is probably correct, unfortunately. He probably bought himself a bit too much stick.
