Kill What You Eat
« on: July 19, 2014, 07:09:13 PM »

This has more to do with the way kills are credited (and in no way a whine).  What I would like to discuss is that our cartoon pilots are much more daring and willing to stay inside badly damaged aircraft and even continue to fight long after, survival instinct would have caused most WW2 pilots to bail.

Out of habit, I try and take as many opportunities at shooting the red guys without crazy gluing myself to his 6 until he finally succumbs to my firepower.  Instead, I try and keep whatever momentum that I have to the max and position myself for another attack, all the time looking around for other red guys.  Many times in the event that one of my damaged opponents receives another damaging blow from someone else, I am still credited with the kill even though I gave up the pursuit long ago.

What do you think, is my AH instinct to look around twice and pounce once, being unfair to my fellow friendly players, and should I "eat what I kill" = continue to hunt a target once I have started the pursuit?

If it's not done deliberately for the reason of getting cheap kills by constant "tagging" of enemy planes in tho hope someone will finish them up later - no then not, absolutely not.
During more or less 'normal gameplay' (oh boy, I hope I'm not opening Pandora's Box here), it all evens out in the end. Sometimes you get kills on enemy planes 10 minutes after you fought, sometimes you will remove the wings of three cons in a row and get an 'assist' each time.

depends on the scenario, if im defending a base, and a damage a target enough that he is no longer a real threat, or easy pickins for somebody else, ill favor retaining me "E" over getting the kill.  But if im out hunting, i'll glue myself to a target as long as I can, until his buddies come to save him, or one of us is dead.  (and BTW, it's who ever did the most damage tha gets the kill, if you shoot him to pieces and he's still flying, then I come along and get a pilot kill, I get the kill, you get the assist)

I follow what I learned from someone w/some real world experience...the highest enemy is your biggest threat and should be your target. That may change many times in a combat.

It depends on the situation at the time.  If the bad guy is all alone and I have friendly help, I'll usually press for the kill.  If it's the other way around, or a furball situation, I'll fly more conservatively.  I.e. damaging the enemy A/C and set up for another attack while checking my surroundings.

I get what you are saying Chilli and it fits the type of fights you an I find ourselves in a lot of the time.  Multiple cons, usually higher altitude, all bent on our destruction.  You cannot lock in to one, as this opens your six up to an easy attack.

Floob,

You and Waystin are right on in both cases.  Kodiak made me feel a little better about this non committal to follow all the moves a pilot makes to try and avoid my attacks.

My style of flying, has developed from some painful learning experiences.  I have noticed that some other folks seem to do well scraping their bellies against the ground and surviving even in outnumbered situations.  Most of the Pigs make their living scrapping it up "in the mud" (we like to say).  I do not.  I find myself in no win situations.  Even when I have been able to do incredible amount of damage to a still flyable enemy plane, I am either downed by the nearest and fastest enemy, or have a conga line  :uhoh waiting their turn on my 6.

Either, it is the rides that I choose, or more likely my lack of confidence in my SA, that leads me to set a hard deck around 7k feet and try to, at least, level off there, and give myself some room to, exit swiftly in a dive if needed.

Yeah I see that all the time. Everybody down on the deck in a camped nme airspawn, I don't play that either. I also avoid fighting in the hordes since I fly a slow plane with no guns. My usual MO is to fly out into an empty sector and hope that someome will come try to kill me.

I guess it depends on the definition of when a fight is "ended".

Some of my definitions:
A guy is taking town ack down - End is when he's not doing that anymore...
Your flying bomber escort - End is when con can no longer shoot at your bombers...
Base defense - End is when they leave...

If the red guy chooses in those situations to stay around, then the effort will be to send him/her to the tower.  Does this also sound like a lack of commitment?
