Just wondering why the Sherman's show black diesel smoke starting up, when they are gasoline powered ?

   Did you ever drive older cars? When I grew up you checked your oil and fluids or you didn't make it home lol.

We've done engine swaps for all M4 Sherman tanks to improve hauling power.

Don't mind the diesel engines, all fuel and work is paid for by HTC and the crew.



Next comes suspension and track upgrades for all tanks to reduce the number of flipped tanks.

I'm 66 years old. Some of the old cars smoked, but not like these tanks. The Firefly was gasoline too.

LOL...given the smoking logic...shouldn't every P47 belch black smoke too?  They shared the same engine until the M4A4.

I don't care so much about the smoke...its the 7 second start up time and that HTC has it with a top speed of 21mph when every tank book printed says it was 25-30mph.

I rarely drive them though...to slow and they die to damn easy....unless I am shooting one...then it takes 3-4 rounds to kill.  LOL

Not all Shermans were gasoline powered.  The Marines used diesel powered Shermans in the Pacific because they could get them quicker than the gasoline powered Shermans and the USN had large amounts of diesel fuel available.  I believe the M4A6 was also diesel powered with a Caterpillar built diesel engine.

Hmmm.  The Jug has the P&W 2800.  IIRC the Sherman had a version of the Wright 1820 (B-17 engine)

Old carburetted gasoline motors produce black smoke when the mixture is very rich. Like when you cold start using choke, or when you suddenly give it more gas.

It wasn't diesel, it was coal.  They used it to reduce the risk of a fuel explosion in case of the armor being compromised.  It was also useful for staying warm in winter and barbequing.

I thought they were all Multi fuel, designed to burn any fuel available.

The ones my father worked on in France had the twin GM 6-71 diesels. I believe they were the M4A2.

The M4A2 and the M4A6 had diesel engines, all others as far as i can tell had gasoline engines. I do not know everything about tanks, but the ones we use in HTC had gas engines. I was just stating an observation. Didn't mean to put a thistle up your kilts.
