Track IR-5: the six o'clock view!
« on: December 12, 2014, 09:50:47 PM »
Ok folks, I really need help with figuring this one out: I am using track-IR 5 and really have poor six o'clock view in certain planes, as all I see when I turn my head to look back is the pilot seat, especially in the F4U/F6F family of planes....  Is there a way to better see one's six o'clock view, without having to lean forward so much while using track-IR?  The excessive leaning forward and head turning in order to see an un-obstructed six o'clock view is really cumbersome.  Can one somehow get a good six o'clock view, without this excessive forward leaning?  The head turning is not too bothersome to me, but if I can just avoid the excessive forward leaning....  I have read elsewhere that somehow the head position can be changed in order to get a better FOV, thus giving you a better, less burdensome, six o'clock look with Track IR?  I would greatly appreciated an in-depth answer as how to do this.  Thank you in advance.

try resetting your default head position when centered. This helped me a lot. Center your Track IR then Pause it. Move your head up as much as you can handle by using the page up key and then hit F10 key to save. Then unpause your Track IR.

See if that helps. It helped me out some. Also, if you bump up your spped or smooth some it will help with you having to turn/move so much. It will take some tweaking until you get it worked out.

If you scale the forward/back movement you can increase the pilot's head moving with less actual movement.
If you lean back first, then center your view while leaning back, you won't have to lean forward so much.

In the track IR profile you use, reduce the axis down to yaw and pitch only. Un-check everything else in that row.

Roll
x
y
z
True View

In the game check track IR relative view. Now you will inherit all of your saved head positions including your 6 view. If you leave any of those checked you will disable inheriting the saved head positions.

If you have never setup your views and are trying this, now is a good time to set them. Some fighters even have rotten 6 views when setting them with the view adjustment keys.

Many of these air craft had mirrors. HiTech explained he was not modeling mirrors because it would give an advantage to players with the strongest systems. Maybe with AH3 that will be a moot point.

think what you want is use a button on your stick to look back then use trakir to move side to side.

I say speed up the curves a touch and give your brain time to rewire the body movements you have to make.  Trying out some other profiles might be in order too.

First save what you have then make a new file just in case you go backwards.

Take advantage of the 3D head display in trackir.

The X axis is one you want to work on.  Triton pointed out using the speed slider will give you a bit of a boost.  Try that then go back and work on your curves trying different angles and work the speed curve with that.

Trackir is very flexible and powerful.  Just jump in trying different things till you have a feel for it.

Try turning off different axis to see what they do.

You should be able to match any view you can get with the standard hat switch views.

This is what you need to do and you will have your old hat switch 6 oclock view but the rest of views will be normal trackir views.

Thanks to all for the replies and, specifically, thank you, Bustr: I will definitely try your suggestion.  Since I am really new, I would love to know how you saved your six o'clock views via the F10 function.  I do not have any views mapped to any of my hat switches, since I want to strictly rely on track-IR for my views.  My hat switches are strictly being used now for other flight functions (trimming, etc..).  I guess what I am asking is, how do I setup reasonable six o'clock views, if I am not mapping anything to the hat switches?  Is it just a matter of using the in-flight page up/page down, forward/backward head movement while looking back, then hitting F10 to save? I know that I would need to do this chore for every plane, but are there already saved six o'clock files that others have and are willing to share for specific planes?  I know that much of this depends on personal customizations, but for the past three weeks since I have started this game, all I have been doing is setting up things and, at this point, I really want to focus on competitive flying now!  Thanks again to all.  Please share your TIR-5 profile if you are willing! :salute

This definitely works. But there is a downside. I fly the Bf-109 a lot, and the beauty of trackIR is being able to move my ahead around those bars to get better views on the target. If you disable the X,Y and Z, you lose the ability to move around the bars... So, I'm trying to make due with everything on except roll. It... It sucks, for now. I guess I have to try to get used to it...

Bloo planes are PITA with trak IR.  One of the reasons I don't fly them.  You can optimise it as per above but IMO you cannot reproduce the ease of access to a hat driven 6 view with trak IR. It's possible of course to get to the view ....just not easy to assume the right head position as quickly.

Pelota,

Spawn on the runway. Hold the key(s) to get the view direction you want. Then using the Page up\down and the four arrow keys. Move that view direction around until you have the best you can get. Then hit F10 to save. If you don't like it when you test it, use the same keys again or hit the Home key to return it to it's default position to start over. This is good if you move your gunsight view up and down a lot which is your default forward view.

With some aircraft you will have one view direction that will not respond to moving it around. Something about Windows and too many keys being held down at the same time. Other Players can tell you how they get around that. I've always borrowed the line in question from another plane's hps file and copied it over the view position line of the plane's hps file I'm working on. I mapped the lines below to the keys.

It will take awhile for all of your fighters and bombers if this is your first time. Or in the past some players have been kind enough to share their <plane.hps> files with others. You can set a plane's views back to the default by deleting that plane's hps file from the planes folder. If you are into working on things in long hand, here is the contents of the hps file mapped out for you. You can edit them in notepad. You cannot hurt anything making changes to these files. Just delete them if you get in trouble and they will be regenerated.

There is one simple checkbox that greatly helps this problem.

On your YAW settings, check the box that says "LIMIT". This will stop your view at 180 degrees. (dead six)

Now set your "X" scaling a little steep.  MY 3rd point is set at 15 True head movement, and 10 head speed.  points 1 and 2 are equally spaced to create a gentle curve to point 3.  points 4 and 5 are flatlined at 10.

with these settings, turning your head just 45 degrees gives you a dead six view, and moving your head side to side in the same direction lets you look around your seat.

       ALSO, uncheck "ROLL" it's useless.

To work on the starting head position, turn off trackir then use the arrow keys and the page up and down keys to get a good starting head position then hit F10 to save that head position.  Now turn back on trackir and see the difference.
