Upgrade Ouestion
« on: April 18, 2018, 09:46:00 AM »
Hi all,

First, Im wanting to upgrade my RAM from 12gb to 16gb.

I currently have an older mobo:evga 141-gt-e770-a1 x58 classified 3, I7 960 3.20mhz 1366 chipset.

Memory is CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 Desktop Memory with Airflow Fan Model CMT12GX3M6A1866C9

I want to replace the old memory with:G.SKILL TridentX Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C8D-16GTX .

Mobo will support 24 gb of mem, its just the mobo being a little old .Should I pull the trigger ? Think this will work ? or no it wont work.

Thanks all in advance

Have you researched and verified that this memory upgrade is compatible and will work with your MB?

Just going from memory , I thought that your particular MB used Triple Channel ( 2 sets of 3 DIMMs ), instead of the more common dual channel ram setups.....

Note: I have not checked on or looked up any information about your MB, or what is and is not compatible....

Good thinking, TC. This time, however, almost everything seems to be possible:

Quote
  One DIMM: If using 1 DIMM (Single Channel), install into: DIMM slot 1.
  Two or Four DIMMs: If using 2 DIMMs (Dual Channel), install into:
DIMM slots 1 and 3. If using 4 DIMMs (Dual Channel), install into:
DIMM slots 2, 1, 4, and 3.
  Three DIMMs: If using 3 DIMMs (Triple Channel), install into: DIMM
slots 1, 3 and 5.
  Six DIMMs: If using more than 4 DIMMs, use: DIMM slots 2, 1, 4, and 3
then proceed to occupy the following DIMM slots in this order: 6 and 5.

As I said: Almost... According to the manual 8 Gb sticks aren't supported:

Quote
These slots support 256 Mb, 512 Mb, 1 Gb, 2Gb, and 4Gb DDR3 technology.

I have the physical manual too. where do you see that ref. ? Not trying to br disrespectfull in any way. Is it in the pdf online ,or in the manual? just askin.

thanks
Dyna

Edit:In my haste to order I overlooked The VERY FIRST SENTENCE in the manual. Thanks so very much for your quick replys T.C. and Tks Bizman for saving me  some cash. If youse are anywhere near my neck of the woods,Ill buy the first round.

My bad, I should have been more specific about the source: Page 21 in https://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/141-GT-E770.pdf

The manual I found may be for another revision so a pinch of salt may be needed.

Dyna, even if your MB was able to use 8 GB DIMMs, you would get better performance using (4) 4 GB DIMMs instead of using (2) 8 GB DIMMs.... The larger the GB capacity of the DIMM usually lowers the overall performance .....

Just a thought to consider

Hope this helps

TC,

Understood. I did'nt realize ,its just my heat sink and fan populate and I mean its a B--ch ,that I might get away with a two card dual channel kit (just make it easyer(sp)).

4card,dual ch. shouldn't be to tough. good call sir, tks again, saves me alot of trouble.

Dyna, if your CPU's heatsink/fan is hanging over some of your DIMM slots, you'd be better off ordering 1 or 2 low-profile DIMMs so they clear and want be pushed on or against the heatsink/fan.....

Just a suggestion

Good luck and hope this helps

Good point.  I've had a few builds that the height of the RAM modules were problematic.
