What is the fate of an orphaned skin?

When a skinner quits the game his skins are preserved for six months. After that time if he has not rejoined the game his skins are put up for adoption. This means that any other active skinner can adopt one of his skins through the skins submissions page, repaint the same aircraft and then resubmit the skin in his own name. A skinner can only adopt one skin at a time and has six months to submit it or he loses it and it goes back into the adoption list.

Most of the skins in the adoption list are quite old and so lack the AH3 lighting effect files needed to look good in the game. They suffer from an unrealistic shiny chrome finish. Currently Vraciu is working through the old P-51s, Devil is redoing 109s and 190s and I am updating various Spits, P-47s, A6Ms, B-24s, B-29s amongst others.

The reason for me posting the list was so I could give it to Lyric1 and let him find info on the subjects.

The 29th Sentai Skin on the Ki-84 looks awful in AH3. Weird rivets and makes the aircraft look like a 70s diecast toy car. It looked way better in AH2. I have to fly with my eyes closed a lot more now

One problem is that if the old skin lacks a bump map the game substitutes the default skin's ones instead and the rivets drawn on the skin might not match the positions of the ones on the default bump map. The biggest issue though for old skins is the horrible chrome finish the game gives to skins that lack a specular map.

This is why skinners are upgrading the older skins, some of which are very good skins except they were done before the new maps existed. Unfortunately I don't think any current skinner has a template for the Ki-84 so it will likely have to wait until that shape is updated by HTC before any new skins get done for it.

The photo looks like they parked in East L.A. over night and it got tagged.

That is actually fairly tame for mid-war Italy/Sicily-based Ju-88s, some of the photos Lyric1 has found me of them look a lot messier than that. The idea of this scheme was to break up the silhouette of the aircraft during dawn/dusk attacks over the sea.
