Actually you would be surprised to know that I studied French for several years in school - I hated it of course and have supressed nearly all the memories... I think it would all come back pretty quick if I opened those books again, same for German which I also studied..

They didnt shoot at me, it's Canada after all...

They were just really frightened of me, they thought I was going to hurt canadian citizens (not kidding here, no joke), and apparently could not understand why on earth an American would want to visit Canada...
