Seems the Democratic presidential candidates are in a bit of a huff about some comments Dean made about wanting to get the vote from guys with a "pickup with Confederate flag decals."

Kerry, Gephardt, and Lieberman took the expected view by indirectly calling him a bad, bad racist man.

Here's what I find interesting... the article states that Dean is not in favor of the Federal assault weapons ban. In fact, the article states that he would rather see weapon regulation left up to the states. In addition, "Dean told the National Rifle Association in a 1992 questionnaire that he opposed restrictions on private ownership of assault weapons, and received the NRA's highest ratings when he was governor."

So, a leading Democratic candidate who supports states' rights, is a former governor, supports the 2nd Amendment, and just may understand that the Confederate flag is not solely a symbol of everything bad that ever happened to blacks?

If Arnold Swarzenegger can be a "left wing" republican, why not have a "right wing" democrat :-)

I think it's refreshing to see democrats and republicans who don't support every single major issue their respective parties typically endorse. I think it shows guts, and gives us more voting options.

Maybe I won't feel like such a weenie if I start voting Democrat again... :-)

Without getting into a discussion about what a silly crock of **** the Assault Weapons ban is, Dean has changed his position on the Ban.

Basically it sounds like he was against the ban when he was govenor becuase:

1. He was for states rights since he was head of a state.

2. Hunting is huge in Vermont and the Ban could affect weapons used by hunters. Such as semi-auto shotguns and rifles.

3. He was trying to win just Vermont.

And, now that he is running for president, he wants to seem more of the typical Dem candidate and is saying that the Feds should make these types of laws, not the states and that he supports the Ban.

Nice flip-flop. Makes me much more secure about how he'll keep his other campaign promises.

Exactly. Hope he sticks to his governor's ideals and doesn't throw in with the typical Dem party line on some of these issues.
