Location: Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, Romania
Title: Harriers break new ground
Date: October 2003

History was made when eight Harriers and 140 personnel of No 1(Fighter) Squadron from RAF Cottesmore, Rutland, flew to the former Warsaw Pact country of Romania for a two-week exercise with the Romanian Air Force (RoAF) during October. The exercise, called Lone Kite 03, ran from 06 to 17 October and is part of the UK Ministry of Defence’s Outreach Programme which involves bilateral training activities with countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and has so far involved Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia as well as Romania.

The MiG-21 really is a small airplane.  It makes the Harrier look big. Nice pix BTW.

Ya Furby, those Harriers are from where I work!  Couple of guys I work with went on that detachment and they spent the whole time being sick because the food was so bad.  The car they were loaned by the Romanians didn't have headlights, had bald tyres and the roads had huge pot holes.  Not fun driving at night!  :)  They all went expecting to have a really laid back fun laden time! :)  Muhawahahaha

BTW Furby, those MiG-21 are the updated ones, they can track 12 a2a a/c at the same time, apparently.

I used to work with the guy on the left (below), he's a RN Lt, Air Traffic Control -

Really they're not that good, wait until they get the better engine (T12).

Anyway, you might like this pic - RAF Harrier T10  & RN Sea Harrier T8.

Ive always through the MiG21 was one of the more imposing aircraft designs.

Anyone who has ever stared into the exhaust port can assest, Im sure.

Saves on servicing costs by reduces the flight hours on the new birds, most likely.  Besides its not like the RAF was coming over with Eurofighters or anything.  Why bring out your best if the British aren't?  :p

If I recall theres a reliablity issue with the Mig-29 and the service life of their engines are very short and expeinsive.
