Dangit! Forgot the gun camera!!!
« on: November 01, 2000, 10:25:00 PM »
I'm eeking my way NW just barely above 3k in a B26. I'm a rook headed to A20 from A16. It's taking forever to get the bird that high, and only just barely make the 3k mark as I see the field ahead of me. I'm alone, but there's no real presence around the field. There's one contact, but heading away. So I hit auto pilot, get to my bombsight, and what do I see --!!! A newly taken off buff, headed south-ward! He's low and wallowing, as all buffs are for about 10 miles after takeoff. Now, I'm at 3k, can't do anything, right? So I warn my channel, and continue bombing the heck outta a hangar. Then I figure, what the heck! After that's done, I hop back to the pilot's seat, and IN A B-26 FROM 3000 FEET perform an inverted loop.

The pressure and speeds are tremendous, groans, creaks, and really bad noises. Coming out of it, I'm still high, but moce closer. Target is tail to me and 4k away, I lose about 500 feet with no throttle on (going 300 about now, maybe more, still creaking), do a little bobbing to lose speed, and give up. I only got one pass, if I miss him, I'm dead or out of luck. So with no throttle, blazing up at this guy, I come into range feeling I'm not gonna get much damage in.

I open up at 1k range, all my guns shooting forward. I ping his starboard wing first, and readjust, get his port then the fuselage. He managed to get into the tail turret but only got a couple shots off before his wing disintegrated. I take a few pings, but nothing big. I then blaze through the wreckage (his one-winged plane is still where it was when it had two wings) barely missing a collision, and realise I'm still coasting with no throttles. I throttle up, and take an external look.

The dive was so steep and fast I lost my port aileron and didn't even know it.

An hour later, watching Spin City, I realized..... GUN CAMERA!!! AAAARGGGHHH!!!!

That's NEVER gonna happen again, and I forgot it!!! Once in a lifetime!!!

P.S. A Yak followed me home the whole way, we traded glancing shots, and I landed safely on my second runway pass (dented but in one piece! both engines too)

The point? Too bad the gun camera isn't automatic like real gun cameras... Too bad it doesn't start when you fire the guns.

Yes, that's it.

Actually, Charlie Sheen isn't so bad. It's not the same without Michael J. Fox, but I think it's a reasonably humorous substitute. Some of the jokes seemed a bit forced, but the writers will get better.

If you have a programable stick, you can program the gun camera to toggle on every time you pull the trigger. The problem is it can make the film seem choppy and the toggle can get out of sequence with the firing.

I guess it would be nice if starting a film and stopping a film could be two different keyboard commands.

Try the JU-88. The B-26 will seem like a gift from heaven after that  . Cilmbs worse, has mucho mucho worse guns.

I've been dogfightning against 190s in B-26
Those 5 .50 calibers for the pilot does their job well when fighters tries to bounce from below.
where from they got that 5th .50 caliber mounted next to the bombadier (no, im not talking about fixed one in the plexi glass)? is that some sort of addition like some Ju-88 A-4's had?

But try Ju-88 A-4.. now thats something
I once dove in front of Lancaster from above and behind (passed him nicely).. then gave facefull of 7.92mm from my all fixed gun positions. (right behind all 4 7.92mm can hit enemy)

If you set the film to activate when you fire, wouldn't that give you about fifty very short films/sortie? Not too much fun to sorth through  .

I wish we could have a "gun camera" function (optional, of course) where the fire button would activate film while you held it down and maybe another 10 seconds after (I seem to recall that there was such a delay in real life), all of these short snips would then be saved in the same film slot, or maybe even in a date/sortie/time stamped slot.

We need a real gun camera.  It should turn on when you pull the trigger and keep running for say 15 seconds, then shut itself off unless you pull the trigger again.  The film from each sortie should be automatically stored in a separate file.

Wait a minute....let me get this straight.  You were bombing from an altitude of 3000 feet?  I dont know what version of the B26 you were flying, but I can get it to climb pretty quickly.  I have put it on autoclimb before and set speed to 130 or 135 and climbed at well over 1000 fpm.

Well, slight change: I was at 6000 feet. I didn't know how to read the gague. Now I do. But I always set 100% fuel. I'm learning via offline tests that's a very stupid thing to do...

The reason it won't climb worth a darn is the full fuel tanks. I tried getting a buff to 10k last night.... It AIN'T gonna happen. What AH needs is a fuel dump button, so you can dump unneeded fuel without having to start over from scratch.

Maybe some text would appear on your screen, by the framerate text, telling you you're dumping fuel, and what total % you have at the moment.

That'd be cool
