CH-47 Self Protection

Gents,

I'm not that familiar with the CH-47, but the pilot killed last week was a good friend of mine that I flew with here at the University. My question is do the 47's currently deployed have any active countermeasures on them, such as exhaust diffusers, LAMPS, or a MAWS system?

The Chinook as a whole carries no active or passive countermeasure systems. It is a transport aircraft and it fills that role well. I've seen some indications that some MH-47s have been fitted with countermeasures for SpecOp roles.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. The use of this aircraft in an environment filled with insurgents is insane and inexcusable.

There's a big stink from a state senator (Durbin I think?) about the guard aircraft not being equipped with the same countermeasures as their active duty conuterparts. I haven't followed it much beyond the headlines, so I don't know if he's comparing apples to apples or if there's some grandstanding involved.
