OT (non AH related) FB install
« on: December 04, 2003, 10:19:09 AM »
I cant seem to log on to UBI's tech forum right now. I apologize for the using this forum but there are a lot of smart folks here.

I unistalled FB, defragged and then went to do a clean install and ultimately patch up to the current version. Everything goes well as it (installshield starst up)"prepares to install" tehn i get an error.....

This is the error msg

I use win 98se

Any ideas?

TIA

I'd suggest cleaning out the Temp subfolder in Windows.

Everything can be deleted, just don't have ANYthing else running so you don't get an error "Windows using this file" (its a temp cache file, it'll be recreated the next time the app is run).

The installshield usually places files into the temp folder (even though it lists the path differently as seen in your screenshot) and if you have an older FB install run just before you do the current - some of the files may not be written over and can cause this error.

If this doesn't work, I'll check it out on my PC (Win98) in an hour (haven't installed the latest patch yet) and let you know if I get the same error.

I just installed the 1.21 patch and it worked fine, but my system used Winzip self extractor to open it.

You can just run winzip, open the .exe file in it, and unzip it that way with "use folder names" checked.

You may as well install it Roscoroo, its much better than the game out of the box and much better than 1.11.

One of the greatest fixes: The mirrors, all the planes except the P47 would halve the framerate. Now they don't appear to impact it at all.

I only tested a couple of planes - but the P40M is much improved, the Zero is no longer super agile at speeds it shouldn't be (P40M can easily outrun it) and the 109G2 can zoom all over the place - not to mention the engine cools down extremely fast.

Only two disappointments: The Pacific map's water still looks like the Atlantic and it appears the uber AI gunners are back. Tried a Hurricane IIc and La7 attacking 3 Blenheims (on rookie settings), and out of 3 tries they got my radiator or engine each time (in head on passes).

I have different issue in that I had dl'd the patch and played it. But I had also installed numerous betas and tweak files since I had first installed fb that I wanted to go ahead and clean out the old and do a fresh clean install.

Well after uninstalling Fb and cleaning all ubi IL FB files off my HDD I ran a defrag and grab my dsik to installl it new.

CD1 auto runs, asks language the begins to install. It installs the temp files and does it checks and then finally goes to  "Prepare to install". The "blue bar" gets about 1/5th the way and the error pops up.

I searched my reg for any remaining files, I did file folder search for any missed files as well.

In the windows temp file a setup text is created. within this text I found this

Quote
ProductCode={8DF712DA-D325-4FD0-8DE8-E2D78FC3CDC3}

That 8df7 folder is the one with the problem. I am thinking it may be a problem with the security protection.

I was looking to see if there was something I could spot that is obvious in error but no luck.

So go ahead install the patch. It ran fine for me and my problems are unrelated to it.

Oh, okay. I thought you were having problems applying the patch.

Did you try going to C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer and verifying that the 1033.mst file is in this {8DF712DA-D325-4FD0-8DE8-E2D78FC3CDC3} folder?

It seems like its not finding that file there.

If you need a copy of it, I have one on my machine - its the same thing you'd have because its a Il2 FB specific file.

Its there, I tried deleting that folder altogether but get a seperate error.

Theres an accompanying 1033 folder on Disk 1 that is the "english install". In that folder theres the readme in english, and an auto run file etc......

Dunno whats up.

I installed the same cd on my brothers a bit ago and it installed fine. I copied that 1033 and the big number folder and tried it on mine and still no go.

Something must be left on this system from the uninstall but damned if i can find it.

Reboot and try to delete that folder C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\8DF712DA-D325-4FD0-8DE8-E2D78FC3CDC3

It should have been marked for deletion by the uninstal program.

Then try to re-install.

do you have several profiles (for different users)  on your computer ?
