I think it's time to have one map
« on: December 04, 2001, 03:09:00 PM »
Why not have one map?  With 300+ players in the arena (and growing), why not use a map of the world?  The maps we are using are too darn small.

Perhaps we could start off small (eg) and limit the conflict to 1) subsets of Europe and Great Britain and 2) subsets of the Pacific war.  Later, as the arena grows, incude more of Europe and Africa, SE Asia, China, Japan and etc.

The three sides would be randomly assigned to 1) Japanese & Russia <heh, great pair>, 2) Germany and Italian and 3) US and UK.

At the beginning of the war, if your side, say Rook, were assigned to Japanese and Russian planes, then you couldn't fly anything else!  If you want to fly LW, then you must capture LW bases!  Furthermore, LW planes can be flown out of LW bases alone!  Similarly for US & UK and Japanese & Rusian.

In this manner, the entire plane set would be open to you ... you would have to go capture some bases though before you could fly them.

When the arena is reset, the plane sets would be redistributed among the three countries (rook/bish/knit.)

Sounds cool to me.  :)

Curly,

Not to be negative or anything, but what about squads? What happens if the squads are baased on a particular side / plane?  :(

DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Sure Maverick ... my thoughts were if that a LW squad wanted to fly LW, they would have to capture a German base and then defend it -- otherwise, they would lose their LW rides.  And yes, they would have to fly non-LW rides to capture the base.

On the other hand, I've seen many LW only squads fly Japanese planes off CVs.  I guess they could capture the LW base using N1Ks/KIs/Zekes.   :)  I guess if a LW only squad was stuck on the US-UK side, they would have to either use US-UK planes to capture a LW base or switch sides.

Nah BG, they probably won't try it ... I was suggesting 3 sides (rook/bish/knit), not historical match ups.

I was trying to find a way to a) keep 3 sides, b) solve the small map problem and c) introduce an interesting twist to the MA.

Sounds like something interesting & new. I would be willing to try something new to see if it was fun. Unfortunately what I consider Fun may not be what the majority of AH members consider fun. I am sure the biggest beef for people would be, "Hey, I pay $15/month & don't want my choice limited".

Kind of like a game of Civilization or Risk.  :D

Each side starts with say 3 airfields and an HQ located far enough away from each other that immediate attack of another side is not possible.

All other fields are neutral until captured. Neutral fields still have normal defenses in place.

At the end of the Tour a side is declared the victor. Victory conditions could be based on a number of things: Total bases owned, kill stats, etc...

I think this would be a good representation of an actual war on a scale that could accomodate the numbers we are seeing in the MA now.

If we have enough players for it I would much prefer an "area" arena where it was all one big arena with seperate areas for early, mid and late war planes.  Anyone could fly any plane anytime and there would be no need for the idiotic perk system plus... we could actually have early war planes and everyone could try em at any time in an "area" of parity.
