A knight in shining armour standing next to a guy in a Flakjacket?

The historians here will undoubtedly have a good answer, and list the type of jacket as well.

To me it looks a propaganda photo to link brave knights to brave airmen but I haven't got a clue which country it might be.

Woul be interesting to know more!

Probably German, the Nazis were heavily into the knight theme. I believe Hitler got a painting made of him wearing kinights armor, and the SS were portrayed as a sort of knights order with a castle as HQ and everything.

Yup, Germans adored the monarchie and power, well they still do I guess.
It's pretty much the only country in Europe with a feeling that strong for the monarchie I guess

They still have a royal family, even if Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated after WWI.

Hi Frank,

>Yup, Germans adored the monarchie and power, well they still do I guess.

Still do? I don't think so :-)

Actually, the Windsors (!) :-) have a lot of fans here in Germany and get extensive coverage in the rainbow press. This is entirely based on the "monarchie" aspect, though, and not on the "power" aspect.

Interestingly, Winston Churchill remarked that it might have been a good move to establish a constitutional monarchie in Germany after WW1 to avoid the political confusion of the Weimar republic. I'd say it could hardly have made matters worse!

With regard to the above picture, I've seen it with a caption indicating that the flak jacket equipment for bomber crews on the right was the logical succession of medieval armour on the left.

The "knight's" suit of armour looks more like a collection of spare parts from different periods to me, however. The shoes are 16th century, the calve pieces are missing, the skirt of mail should rather be replaced by plate tassets, and the rough look of the body armour might indicate it's 17th century curassiers' equipment. The helmet with the high comb and rough visor looks like it might be 19th century "replica". (Or it may be all authentic - I'm a bit out of my element here :-)

Regards,

Henning (HoHun)

Just a case of comparing old body with new required body armour.

A B-17 pilot posing for a propaganda picture with a new M-4 helmet and a new, improved flak jacket. :)
