Yup, it's an M16 sitting on the approach to the Ludendorf railway bridge at Remagen.

My father crossed here as part of the 307th Field Artillery, 78th Infantry Division. He told me that the west bank of the Rhine was lined with bumper to bumper M16s, trailered quad fifty mounts and towed 40mm guns, all to deal with Luftwaffe attempts to destroy the railway, and (more importantly) the two pontoon bridges thrown up by the engineers.

He saw his first jet fighters here when a pair of Me 262s tried unsuccessfully to bomb the bridges. He said one of the jets was hit by tripleA and crashed into the river.

My regards,

Widewing

those 262's were escorting Ar 234's, making this the first jet fighter/jet bomber combined ops of all time.
