Can I put my old hard drive in my new box to copy files? My old box doesn't have a network card in it. If I can put the old hard drive in, what will I need to do to access the data?

yes you can ... you can hook it to either cable .

I ussually just hook it to the same one as the main hd

when you do this you have to do three things .

first take out your primary hard drive
it will have jumper pins on it (and ussually there settings will be on top of the hd )

set this jumper to "Master"

second take your old hd and set its jumper to "Slave"
(install the drives try not to touch the circuits on the bottem)

now you start up your PC and go into the bios (hold Del key ussually during startup)
Go to the standard cmos setup page use the arrow keys to scroll down to "Pri Slave" hit the plus or minus key til it says "Auto" then hit the enter key . (it sometimes detects the size of the drive right then or it detects it after it boots up )

press esc key then ussually f10 for save and exit or use the arrow keys til you get to save and exit .

now let it boot up all the way . you should have a D:\ drive now which should be your old hard drive And you can now transfer Files to your primary hard drive ( be shure that you turn on show all files so you dont miss the hidden ones )

This works for setting up extra hard drives most of the time ... every now and then some pc's will need a driver ect installed to do this but not ussually . Ive never had a problem with XP detecting the extra drive though.

Later hard drives like Maxtor still have the jumper on the back, but there's a "cable select" position (default). By leaving the jumper here, the disk automatically detects whether it is Master or Slave according to the way the cable is connected. (Master is at end of IDE cable, Slave is part way up)

CS cable select doesnt always work when theres an operating system on each hard drive.... (thats why i suggest the master slave settings first )

on my dual os system i just turn of the 1st hd in the bios and it boots up XP on the second hd ... and it even reconizes the 1st hd drive for data .

but it doesnt work on CS ... (dont know why thats just how it works )

and yes some hd's have the jumpers in various locations ... some on the bottom , some on the rear or the front
