Tips for new Hurricane I flyers.

Convergence to 200, all guns. Fire at a solid target only at D350 or less. Dont bother with HOs or snapshots, get solid solutions.

The .303s are much maligned, for several reasons.

#1 The vast majority of players experiences are formed by the MA where ac with 20mm or .50 cal batteries are the standard. LAs, 109s, Spits, P-51s, Tiffies...

#2 Most CT setups are 1942-45 and dont have the Hurricane I or Spitfire I to begin with, save the BoB or BoF.

...this leads to the very wrong tactic of firing at "typical" AH gun ranges of D400+, which will yield nothing with .303s, and the mythology begins..."they are BBs"..."they are useless"...ect ect.

Get in close and make it count. Dont get caught low without some backup, you wont escape multiple 110s alone.

Squire's comments apply equally to pilots of the bf110C-4.

You won't survive multiple Hurris or P40Bs alone. Your only option is extending out of the fight and then re-engaging. Do not fight Hurris and P40Bs alone while low and slow! Don't turn back toward a Hurricane until you have around 1000' and 2.5K on them. This will allow your airspeed to come back up. There is not a single Allied plane that can not out turn you when slow, even the Boston III.

The guns are not the guns of a 110G! I've set my CONV to 450 yards on all weapons and take shots from 150 - 400. The ballistics on these weapons matches up fairly well at those ranges. Spraying will not work. You must line up a good solid burst. The range of the 7mm round is roughly 1.1k to 1.2k don't fire past that range as the bullets simply do not work. This also applies to .303 rounds. Deflection shots pretty much don't work outside of 400 yards.

Good hints Squire!

Since I cancel my MA account I have fly Hurricane I in h2h almost exclusive. 0.303cal is easy to aim but you really need to get close. Yes, avoid the HO's but sometimes short HO can surprised the enemy. Also close range snapshots can easely cause wounded enemy pilot if you can hit to the cockpit area.

Beware mystery engine shotdown. In some stall situtions Hurris engine really swicth off and it wont restart when comeback to the +G. You need to hit E-key again.  This can happend prety quickly ie short -G-0G time period.

Good advice, except that you probably ought not to take any shot over 225 yards, and the best ones are less than 200.  The Hurri can get you in there, and the .303s really chop up a plane if you fire at ranges where you still have some velocity in those little bullets.

Extremely good advice Warloc.

The low power guns of the early war planes - .303's in the Spits and Hurris - .30 cals in the P-40B & 7.7 mm Mg & FF 20mm cannon in the 109E & 110C have a very low trajectory and short range. Anything over D300 is a waste of time.

However, if used correctly the guns can be deadly but you have to get in CLOSE. Set your convergence to 250-225 and stick the prop in the cockpit with him before you pull the trigger!

With the 8x.303 in the Spit or Hurri if you hit your target at your set convergence most aircraft will simply melt. I have exploded two JU-88's in one pass with a Hurri by useing this method.
Same applies to the FF cannons on the 109E. You get it close and it only takes a short squeeze of the triger to down an aircraft.
 
I think that is what most of the gripes about the "worthless" or "bugged" guns in the early war planes is from. Simply being used to the later war high powered guns and not knowing the propper way to use the early war guns.
