Need Information
« on: December 06, 2003, 04:50:54 PM »
First thing.  I get tons of pop-ups with the new OS I now put on my system.  I am now running Windows XP and the popups are a pain.  Worse than Windows SE.

Plus, what is this message crap?

I found I cannot run some programs labeled Windows 95/98.  One program is Thomas The Train which my daughter loves and has been bugging me.  Is there software out there that will allow me to run programs marked WIN 95/98.

Thanks
Rock:  Ya see that Ensign, lighting the cigarette?
Powell: Yes Rock.
Rock: Well that's where I got it, he's my son.
Powell: Really Rock, well I'd like to meet him.
Rock:  No ya wouldn't.

Try this, works for me:
under your start menu, go to 'run'
type 'msconfig'
you'll see a menu, on the far right tab 'startup',
you'll see many programs that your OS runs in the background.
click the one that says 'messenger', that will kill those messages.
for pop ups & stuff like that, you'll need some sort of pop up blocker & use the firewall that is built in for windows under 'network connection' under 'settings', you will need to open up your network connection icon (usually your modem or network card) and click on properties. under properties, there is a tab 'advanced' where it has a firewall. turn that on and it should help.

For the older programs, right click the icon then click properties then comapdabilty, you can set it up to run in 98 or 95 mode as well as 256 color if necessary.

Yup. I bought the pro version as well Roo. You don't know how well it works until you turn it off for the day. :)

I also found  a pop up stopper called 'pop dowm', found it on a place called nonags.com .....cant seem to find it anymore though.
Work great, you can configure it to allow direct launch (of new windows) or have a certain maximum number open at any time.
And it's free!
Same as the previous mentions, press ctrl to open a new window.
Very simple, doesn't do much else.

I use Zone Alarm's free software, for my firewall, and I get NO popups what so ever, just make sure you enable AceHigh.exe in the "allowed" programs, and it can run while AH is.
I regret doing business with TD Computer Systems.

Switch browsers to Mozilla Firebird. You can turn off pop-ups of every type in the options menu, and it's free. You can also set it to block images from a given server; handy for those with kids.
