beta5 graphical/framerate problems
« on: December 07, 2003, 02:48:02 PM »
Now everything worked beautifully in beta3, things got a little hairy in beta4, now I must whine about it in beta5.  In beta3, everything was very good looking and I got 20-30 fps. My system specs are:

2.4ghz p4
512 megs of RAM
geforce4 MX440 graphics card

The problem is, I am getting not-so-good framerates  with TERRIBLE graphics.  The problem is everything is crappy-looking and blurry at a small distance, plus, at some distances the buildings appear very blocky and blurry. The trees and scenery at a distance seem very pastel-like. Here are some screenshots:

Note here how the instruments at the end of my cockpit are blurry, and those buildings look really bad.

Now the road markings right in front of me are blurry. I mean, come on.

It is hard to see here, but the fine detailis such as rivets, and the marking at the end of my plane are blurry, like the original ah p51.

I couldn't find a better picture, but if you look closely at some of the trees in the distance you will find that they are very odd looking, like they are painted.

Anyone know what is up with this?  Is this supposed to happen-am I just plain dumb?  Will this be fixed?

I think that would be the effects of mip-mapping.  I never really understood it and I dont particularly like it.  Always saw the very fine "line" between the regular textures and the "mipped" (?) textures begin.  If I'm not mistaken, mipmapping also uses more resources (having to draw the same texture twice I think?)

I'm sure there's a better explanation... someone care to enligthen me? :)

Maybe they needed to get a new box of crayons? :lol
Most of the people you meet in life are like slinkies. Pretty much useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Your running out of video mem. Just set max texture size to 256. And your fps should be back.

Turn off mipmapping on objects.
