Asus with the nforce chipset?
« on: December 17, 2003, 01:42:55 PM »
well, looking like i might be upgrading the MB in order to get my 9600XT to work correctly. It is known to work on the Asus A7N8X... (the tech with the RMA has been in touch with me).

my question is sort of two-fold....out of this list:
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/overview_amd.htm#nvidia

1. which would be the best bang/buck...i don't need any fancy stuff, just the basics. ( i have sound cards, NICs, etc, however wouldn't rule the onboard options out).

2. if not an Asus/nforce board, what other suggestions would you recommend.

i will currently be placing an XP1800+ with 512 megs of pc 2400 (i think, i can't remember what it is exactly) in the new MB. will also be using SCSI card and HD's.

Don't know bout the 9600XT but my 9800XT works great. Definitely get the Deluxe if you do want to use the ob sound as it is the only one with Nforce Soundstorm.  If you are happy with your sound card one of the othr 2 will be fine.  I really don't see the big difference in the other 2 but the -X is cheaper.

Here's the A7N8X line:

A7N8X-Deluxe - Soundstorm audio (hardware audio ob), dual LAN, Dual channel DDR400 memory, Serial ATA, 6 USB 2.0, Firewire (IEEE1394), Dolby Digital (SPDIF output).  Top of the line board, and very nice.

A7N8X - Software (Realtek) audio, onboard LAN, USB 2.0, dual channel DDR400.  Same performance as the Deluxe, but lacks most of the extras.

A7N8X-X - Software (Realtek) audio, onboard LAN, USB 2.0, single channel DDR400.   Same as above, but lacks Dual channel memory mode.  (This is a *very* minor performance reduction.)  The board also has no extras, just a floppy ribbon, 80 pin IDE ribbon, and backpanel (ATX) plate to fit the board.

There's also some talk about a A7N8X-E, which is supposedly the same as the Deluxe, but with Gigibit ethernet.  I haven't seen this board yet.

The A7N8X-VM is also available, which is a microATX board with onboard GeForce 4 MX graphics.

Bloom,
I didn't notice this new board but it is the same price as the Deluxe in the link above and has the gigibit LAN and a proprietory WI FI connection.
