Modifying Sidewinder Precision 2
« on: May 16, 2004, 01:17:04 AM »
Over time, my Sidewinder has developed quite a lot of play in the stick at the rest position - too much for my liking.  Does anyone know if it's possible to tighten it up by disassembling the stick?  I decided I'd better pop in and ask before ripping off the rubber footpads to remove the hidden screws and take off the baseplate.

Not much help here, I have 2 of em.
The one I use most is starting to develop some.  I just increased my deadband in AH to compensate.

If its anything like the old sidewinder 3d pro inside, I don't think it will be easy to fix. But I havn't been in mine to find out for sure.

Let me know what you find ok?

Took it apart today.  The assembly inside is very simple, but the free play at the center isn't easy to fix.  It's basically due to poor design and/or cheap manufacturing, but it's a cheap stick, so I can't complain considering I intend to replace it before too much longer.  It's loose because there is a tiny amount of space in between the bottom of the stick and the hemispherical things it contacts to move the potentiometers, when the stick is in the rest position.  I glued in some paper strips try to fill it in, which helped marginally, but in the end it's just a relatively cheap stick and there isn't much you can do.  (It's the best of the "cheap" sticks though, IMHO)

I'll probably drop the cash for a the CH set soon, or maybe I'll get the X52 if that turns out to fix some of the downsides of the X45.

My wife brought home some big rubber bands from work. Maybe 6 " long unstretched. 3/16's wide.

Just ran one of those over the handle, down the back, up & over the other side.

Adjusted it so it sat centered.

Much of the center slop is gone.

It also adds just a little resistance when moving the stick.

You may want to give something like that a try.
