Why the fuss about HO?
« Reply #15 on: December 13, 1999, 11:29:00 AM »
Don't you see Nate? That's the whole point: you go with your guns blazing not because you're an idiot who HOs in a FW, you've not left any other option... In many cases you're trying to avoid HO but the moron turns into you anyway.

In AH and in Brand W both an exploding plane just vanishes without a trace and that's what all those "gun blazers" are counting on. In RL you'd have a few thousand pounds of burning wreckage hurtling towards you at 600 mph... If you going to HO you die - that simple. In AH you have a chance "to kill him first". And live...

IMO, netlag is very important in HO. If one of jousters have considerable netlag, they usually both die.

HO still is an option if it develops quick, in the dogfight. But d30 HO preparing pilots really annoy me

I'm certainly not an expert on HO's but I've found there very easy to avoid. I'm certainly getting killed alot (whole different thread) but not from HO's. I don't think you can get caught in a head on if you want to avoid it (on merge). There are a wide variety of moves that make it almost impossible.

This is completely different from turning into a bogie in multiplane furball...or any kind of vertical reverse where a front quarter/HO cant always be avoided.

The tough nut to crack is the front quarter deflection shot set up by a good lead turn or other move that creates seperation and angles at merge. If both sides cant get guns on..it's not a HO  ..been on both sides of that often enough

Ive been playing with the p51s a little. Ive come to the conclusion that the Ho and a dead level 6 shot are about all they got. Most dweebstang pilots dont have a clue how to do a good BnZ so if you pull hard the deflection shot dont do much damage. Ive been letting them have a wack at me(turning) and have been sprayed as many as 5 times with no real damage. So I strongly suggest you dont HO with a stang. Something about the way the guns are modeled give them the advantage, but only in an HO. other than that there just a nusance.

Oh, forgot. If your chasing one and it turns. Dont turn into him. Drive for the corner. If he out runs you so be it. but at least you wont die. And if you caaatch him with no more wep. Well, check the stats for 190vP51 or N1k2 v P51  . A turning stang is a dead stang.

TT - yes, it's very strange. I get shot up sometimes by 51's so bad that ya hear the "Bang! Plink! Zap! Donk Donk Donk! Boom! Ploink! Blam Blam"... causing ya to just hunker down and await the transport back to tower inna body bag... Yet it keeps on going! "Bang! Plink! Zap! Donk Donk Donk! Boom! Blam Blam".. Untill finally it ends... and yer still alive, somehow. Ya do a cntrl-d to check damage... and....nothing..nothing whatsoever. Gud to go.

This happens to me so many times...and *just* by ponys. An assault like this by any other plane would have kilt me long long ago. And yah TT - only in 6 shots. In the HO situation (if I'm unable to avoid it), it merely takes a "plink bonk boom" and I'm history.

Another thing about Ponys: Only the pony kills my radiator (spit). And I've been watching this closely as soon as I discovered the pattern a while back. *No Other Plane Has Killed My Radiator*. In a couple of the situations like I mentioned above (prolonged hits), the only damage would be my rad. Also,  fairly often, a single ping by a Pony at d800 knocks out my radiator.

I dunno...

One last thing. People reading my posts about the dweebstang may think im just bashing. Well the truth is, it is one of my favorite planes. If they would reduce its HO ability. and increase its 6 shot leathilty I would fly the thing quite a bit. Right now its just a dweebmobile and if im in one, its just to find better ways to kill it. I checked my stats. And I have killed 237 of them and been killed 94 times by them.  So its not that I feel picked on. Its that a plane we American,s take a lot of pride in. Has been reduced to a HO special, at this point, in AH

man thats the last post i make about not being afraid to HO
I am affraid allready...
Nate started it 3 nights ago and I havnt won one since.
The 51 and spit should be among the worst for HO atacks. Highly converged guns should be less effective in a quickly changing rage situation.  The two gun FW has equivilent armement to the Spit IX but the weapons are all in half the area. The 109 is even better.
The 51 makes up for this some what by having higher rate of fire on its mgs so the beaten zone of the burst will be longer and more dense.
I am supprised how poorly I do in the LA5 in HOs.
2 * 20s, no convergence, big radial up front to eat the .50 rds...But doesnt work for me.
I am swearing off HOs until further notice.
