Silent Storm.  WWII turn-based squad tactics.

Deus Ex 2.  Scifi FPS with heavy RPG elements.  The first one had THE best storyline I've ever seen in a game.  The second one will hopefully be even better.

Tarmac,

I've just read a review of Silent Storm and am tempted.  Have you played 'Combat Mission - Beyond Overlord'? How does silent storm compare to this?

One thing the reviewer mentioned was that in SS the computer took ages to calculate its turn. Did you find this to be the case when you played it?

cheers

I loved the first Deus Ex also for the same reason ... am looking forward to DE 2.

SS2 is a fantastic game.

Be aware that it is a ww2 game with a SciFi twist.

The ai can take up to a minute on the larger maps to figure its moves.  No big deal really.

There is a free demo to download, but it won't be released in the US until the begining of next year.  You can, however, get a copy from GB sent to you.

Demo available from this site: http://www.silentstorm-online.com/main.php?lang=en&rid=596

Never played CM - Beyond overlord.  There a demo out?

I wouldn't say it takes ages by any means.  Sometimes a minute.  More if the enemy is in your view, as it actually shows them running around and shooting at you.  I wasn't put off by it at all (at least not in the demo version).

I'm working on getting the full version, but I won't be playing it until after final exams.

ed: grab the demo, about a 180MB free download.  It only gives you one axis and one allied mission, but I must have played each about 10 times.  It's addictive.

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord (CMBO West Front) is a bit dated now but still lots of fun.

Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin (CMBB Eastern Front) upgrades the graphics and tweaks the game.

The just released Combat Mission: Afrika Corps (CMAK Italy, N. Africa, West Front?) is the latest and last for this engine.  AK has a few minor bugs probably only noticable by the grognards, I'm sure these will be patched up.  There are plans for a new game engine for future games.

You might be able to find CMBO and CMBB special editions (extra scenarios and mods) in stores (I saw CMBO-SE in best buy, CMBB-SE at EB).  CMAK is only available by mail (as were the other titles when first released).

All games are playable via tcp/ip or pbem.  There is a thriving mod and scenario creation community.

Demos are available for all 3 games of the Combat Mission series at battlefront.com.

Thanks Tarmac & Furious.

I'll download the demo once I've got through H&D2.

The home page for CMBO is here:

http://www.battlefront.com/products/cmbo/cmbo.html

There is a demo.  The graphics are nothing to write home about but I found the game play incredible. In addition to the single player campaign, you can play head to head battles by lan or email (bit fiddly but it works), or if you have a mate round, you can both play on the same puter by taking turns.

Line of sight works very well. There are also night missions (star shells included) and the game is pretty scaleable. The game also has a pretty easy to use and intuitive mission editor.

CMBO has quite a cult following and is definitely worth a look.
