Dutch ship capsizes 150 miles North of NYC

The Dutch ship Stellamare, with a mostly Russian crew, capsized at the port of Albany in upstate New York while loading General Electric generators bound for Italy and Romania.  Three crew members are still missing.  The ship sank on Tuesday, but I only heard about it today.  Righting the ship is expected to be difficult.  I used to live near Albany about 12 years ago.  They used to deliver Volkswagens/Audis,  amoung other things, to the port.  I'm not sure if they still do.  GE builds large generators in Schenectedy, which is about 20 miles from the port.

I'm really sorry for the loss of life.  But if it would have happened in the North Atlantic no one would have survived.

Apparently, the generators or turbines are very heavy and they failed to ballast or distribute the load properly.   In one of the articles it said that only about 20 or 30% of the ships rated capacity was loaded when the ship rolled over.  If it was loaded and made it to sea successfully, then there probably would not have been a problem.  I think there was a quote from the Coast Guard or State officials that said it was a well made and maintained ship.

   Your probablity right about the circumstances.  The ship looks brand new.

thats just another reason giant ships and deep water scare the bejeezsus out of me. (see other posts by me if you dont know what im talking about)
