Yesterday it opened, and today got my first look at the new National Air and Space Museum Dulles annex (Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center).
You can see Dulles International Airport from the museum's 7-story high observation tower. It's 28 miles from the National Air and Space Museum's flagship building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Already some 80 attractions are in the massive building, about three football fields long, about the size of a dirigible hangar. Stars include the B-29 Enola Gay, Concorde, Boeing 307 Stratoliner, X-35B VSTOL fighter, Space Shuttle Enterprise, P-47D, Arado jet bomber, Japanese George fighter, SR-71, P-38 as it looked at end of WWII, and many aerobatic, speed, and gliding record holders.
Access is easy off Route 28. Admission is free but parking is $12. Lotsa stuff to be dazzled by already, and much more to come over the years.
