Can anyone explain how to turn these off?

It almost feels like its a virus, but it looks like a system window, with that dull grey look, at the top it says Messenger Service, and then there is text in the body, not graphics or anything I'll take a screen shot the next time it happens..

Anyone have an idea what this is?

It's a way for networked computers to send messages to each other, if I remember right. To kill it (assuming you're using XP), right click My Computer, click Manage, click Services, look for Messenger. Right click it, click Stop, then under Properties, change the Startup Type to Disabled.

Presto.

Start-Run-services.msc then find messenger right click and disable

Why can't I use msconfig to change my services?The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console (services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is disabling the service.

search the NET for msconfig for XP or win2K.....I do...and it works:aok
