Got parts picked out for computer upgrade - Thoughts?
« on: December 24, 2003, 12:13:28 AM »

Santa was good to me this year, so I'm switching from my U2W SCSI hard drives to a single Seagate Barracuda SATA drive too.  The processor is a 2.4GHz P4 with 533MHz FSB.

·Should I go with a Crucial PC2700 DIMM instead (for about the same price)?
·Will I notice a difference in speed with this Mobo/CPU between the PC2700 and PC3200?

I'll be ordering this stuff on Friday, so if you don't read this until then, it's too late...feel free to taunt me with "you should have bought this, dummy" posts though. :)

Depends what you use the system for.

Programs that use large amounts of data, yeah - you'd probably see a decent increase with PC3200. Programs with low amounts of data processing - PC2700 would be fine.

Then again, I didn't see an appreciable increase between overclocked SDRAM and the lowest DDR PC(number?) memory. I had, however, adjusted to memory timings/cycle length.

If it was my system, I would go for at least PC3200 so I would be good to go on a mobo upgrade to 800 FSB.  Of course, if it was my system I would buy the 800 FSB mobo, cpu and PC 3200 now.  Not sure of the $ diff but it might be worth it.

Ordered the parts...ended up getting 2 x 256MB Mushkin PC3200 for $76 instead of the 512MB from Kreton.  Gotta give Kudos to Newegg too.  Ordered at 9pm last night.  Sprung for the extra $2.99 for expedited processing, and my parts are already in Fedex's hands and on their way to me.  :)
