Murder in the Big City
« on: December 29, 2003, 11:37:45 AM »
This may say more about our big cities then it does about Baghdad, but it is still very interesting..  So tell me why is the UN not in baghdad again?

-------------------------------------------
According to the Army, there were 92 murders in Baghdad, a city of 5 million people, in July. The number dropped to 75 in August, 54 in September and 24 in October.

In New York, a city of 8 million people, there were 52 murders in July, 51 in August, 52 in September and 45 in October.

John Lott of the American Enterprise Institute, who recently published an extensive analysis on Iraqi crime figures, says the numbers indicate that Baghdad's murder rate dropped from 19.5 per 100,000 people in July to a rate of five killings per 100,000 people in October.

By contrast, New York's murder rate is seven murders per 100,000 people, Los Angeles' murder rate is 17 per 100,000, and Chicago's is 22, Lott said, citing FBI crime statistics.

Any such comparison is fallacious beause the current data for Baghdad is not indicative of the general situation.

Before the war started, iraqi jails were opened and most of the violent criminals were released. So the current rate is not the normal one for them, unlike for New York.

I am betting that in a city of 8 million we probably have several thousand violent criminals walking the streets who should be locked up.

NY crime and murder rates would drop too if everyone was allowed to own fully automatic AK 47's and 74's

True - and in Hussein's times some were probably prowling Baghdad as well. But there are also plenty of them that are still locked up.
Comparing the Baghdad with empty jails to New York with jails full to overcrowding is a very unfavorable towards Baghdad.

On the other hand the New York population lives under oppressive socialist government that allows us to believe we are influencing the politics but does not allow us to own defencive firearms, run our businesses as we see fit or raise our children according to our family values.

While the population of Baghdad was not allowed to interfere in politics but was allowed to own massive amounts of fully automatic weapons and run their businesses as they saw fit and also raise children to be honest people.

With more liberal weapons laws and government not interfering with raising our children, we could probably have had as few criminals and as little crime as Baghdad.

New York City officials have asked anyone who commits murder to someone in NYC, please dispose of the body in North Jersey.  The NYC officials would like to lower the city's homicide statistics.  ;)

people who live in large cities should not be allowed to vote unless they own property.
