Please recommend Radeon 9800 Pro settings
« on: December 26, 2003, 12:14:24 PM »
Hello All,

I now have a Radeon 9800 Pro card (128MB) from ATI installed. I am using a L7VMM motherboard 512MB 266 DDR Ram, Athlon XP 2000+ in my computer (lower medium end machine :-) except for the video).

I am running the card at 1024x768 res, 32bit, 4X AGP fast write off.

Any advice on how to tune my system for the best framerates?

Questions :
1. What should I set my aperture at? (AGP)
2. What should my Direct 3D settings be inside the ATI control panel?
3. There are a few BIOs items - cache system bios, cache video ram and share vga memory (8) that I see are currently selected in my bios. Should I leave them as they are?

Thanks a million for your help folks

Interested to hear how you get on. I also have a 2000+XP Proc and put in a 5700 Ultra thinking a 9800Pro was daft in a machine I will probably upgrade totally within 2 years.

I have wondered ever since if I made the right decision.

5700 Ultra is good mind. very happy with it.

Currently using 128mb apperture ATI reckon 32mb ? is inuf but with less than 128 in AH i notice some jerky motion when low.

All of these :- cache system bios, cache video ram and share vga memory TURN OFF or DISABLE.

D3D settings in ATI control, you should be able to run High quality on everything but set AF to performance tab not best quality.
Setting it to best quality in AH1 makes the text in buffer and on map harder to read.

AA and AF any setting as usually it does not impact performance with the Radeons.

Direct3D settings: turn on anti-aliasing, but turn off anisotropic filtering (set the latter to "application preference")

I have tried your suggestions but am still only getting 40fps in AH (I even installed latest Omega drivers). This is only slightly more than what I had with my Radeon 9000pro. I am now considering reloading my software - a task I fear indeed - since I am not sure where I stuck all those original cds :-)

Does anyone else have a 2000+ XP cpu, 512MB 266 DDr and Radeon 9800pro 128MB card running at high fps? (or do you have specs close to this)

I just want to know if it makes sense to reinstall my software.

P.S. Thanks, in advance, for taking the time to answer these questions

Don't!!!  That's about all anyone is getting.  I have a squaddie with a HUGE system and the 9800 Pro.  He's using regular Cat 3.7'S and doing the same as you are.  It is also the same for me with my new 9600 XT and Omega's Cat 10's.

I have a 1.8 GHz, ABIT TH7-II mobo, 512 M of RDRAM.  Everything's updated and tweaked.  Having the 128 M on the Vid Card makes things smoother but infact I am wondering if I shouldn't return to my Gainward GeForce 3 Power Pak Golden Sampler.

I run VSYNC on and App preference on AA and AF D3D and the same for OGL but 2X AA.  I went from 65 FPS in AH to 55, 45 to 35 in Forgotten battles, and we all know that AH2 has issues with the Radeon's.

On the plus....Perofmance in UT 2003, HALO, Call Of Duty, Max Payne, and MOHAAS have improved.  Hehehe I don't play all of those on a regular basis. :)

The games run smoother (128M) prolly does that.  Textures well a draw for me but, "Beauty is in the eyes.....of the Beholder"

I run a asus p4p800 with p4 2.8 with 1 gig a memory and 128mb 9800 pro, no oc'ing and get my monitor max refresh of 75 frame rates. I use Cat. 3.6 drivers with direct 3D settings like this:

Anti-aliasing  4X
Anisotropic filtering  application preference
Texture preference   Quality
Mipmap detail level   Quality
Wait for V-sync          Always on
TRUFORM                   Always off

In AH2 at the 2nd patch online I flew for 20 mins or so with average fr of 34 and lowest at 23

Hope this hlps

Hello Dracon,

Thank you for your reply. The problem I am having is not only with AH2, I have frame rates in the low 40s with AH (current version). This is almost the same as I had with my older video card the 9000pro (128MB). It is this what makes me think that maybe my software is all messed up. In AH2 I get about 30fps at the moment - and that is with the obect and detail set back a bit.

This is why I want to reload the software. The only real problem is I had originally bought an off the shelf computer and all I have are the darn "restore cds" which restore a lot of unwanted junk software to my machine as well. Wish I had just the windows cds.

Oh well - serves me right, should have built it myself.

Thanks again for everyones replies.

Regards

singh7,

No Problem, you're welcome.  I should add that with Fester's new map I seldom do more than high 40's low 50's.

Good luck on your re-install.  Please let us know if it helps!
