Thanks.

BTW, some plane textures seem to be missing from the list. I can't seem to find the 262, B26, B17, and others.

Find the file "shpfilter.txt" in the default C:Program Files/HTC/aheditor/terrains.  Open it and delete any plane name that you want to skin.  Open the TE and it should then be available.

My latest creation...  This is Spit Vc BR112/X of 185 Squadron on Malta.  It arrived via USS Wasp in April 1942 with the standard Brit desert camo covered over on top with USN 1942 blue.  After 5 months of very hard service, it was shot down by ack and bellied in on a Sicilian beach, where numerous photos were taken of it.  Thus, I have a pretty good idea of the extent to which the blue paint had worn off and how much paint chipping and staining there was at that time.  It's shown here like it's en route on its last sortie.

I did this one with textures twice the usual AH1 size, as practice for the high-res AH2 textures.  Who knows?  Maybe some of this will be salvageable for AH2 ;).

Absolutely astonishing bullet.  Where do you get Ideas for skins like that?  I'm struggling!

And btw, what editing program do you use?

Ive also got a question.

I'm currently working on a P-40 for a scenario in H2H im going to set up.  I finished the skin and was going to save it as 256 colors.  I did so and all of my colors were completely wrong.  I cant find a color to substitute it for either.

How did you get your colors to come out?

Corsair, I believe the Betty skins that Skull was referring to are mine, not Ramzey's... where shall I send them too?

Here's an A-24 Banshee

Shiva is correct... thx :)

United... when you start editing a skin from one that is exported from the TE, you need to save it UP to a 24-bit format... aka RGB. That way you have the full gamut of colors to work with.

When done editing, save a COPY of your work out at 8-bit mode (aka indexed or 256-color). Always keep a 24-bit master.

Thank ya Dux.  I made that mistake when I saved my finished 24bit P-40 to a 256, turned out crap and I lost my colors.

I dont think that answered my question, or it did and im too stupid to see it.
• I open the TE and save the texture I want, then close TE.
  • I open the C:/Program Files/HTC/aheditor/terrains/myterr/savedtex/P40ESD.bmp.
  • I save P40ESD.bmp as a 24 bit color bitmap.
  • I edit the skin to where I want it, and then resave as 256 colors (8 bit mode)
  •
Heres what I dont get.

After I saved as 256 colors, all my coloring is messed up.  I.E. I have a bare-metal grey color in 24 bit mode, but in 256 it turns into a teal-blue color.

What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks!

As for ideas, I just have a bunch of books on WW2 airplanes that I read and reread constantly.  Periodically, I see a photo or color profile that strikes my fancy so I make a skin of it.

It's also a good idea to have a bunch of books with accurate line drawings of the AH planes.  This lets you put the panel lines in the right place because sometimes the stock skins have them way wrong.

I use Paint Shop Pro 7.  I got it to specifically to make skins with and had never done any graphics before.  So I just started doing skins, starting simple like that B26 up above to get the hang of it.  I just finished that Malta spit today and was learning new tricks by doing it right up to the end.  So just get after it and you'll be doing great stuff in no time.

When you 1st export the skin, it's in 256.  Your very 1st step in editing should be to increase the color depth as high as it will go.  In Paint Shop Pro, you need to do this anyway so you can use layers.  Then do all your editing and save the file.  Then save it under another name, like by putting an extra character in front.  Then with that new copy open, merge all the layers, then reduce the colors back to 256, then save it as a .bmp without the extra character in front.

The reason for making the copy with that extra character is in case you accidentally hit SAVE instead of SAVE AS after you've collapsed the layers and reduced the colors :D  Ask me how I know this is a good safety tip... :(
