Not at all. The B-24 was a bit tougher than the B-17 according to the ETO loss statistics, though not by much.

The area where the B-17 excelled and the B-24 lost out were handling characteristics.

That surprises me. Guess I've seen too many pictures of Liberators going down with wing folded up in flames from ack hit.

Or maybe it was just the name Flying Fortress? The B-17 and P-47 seem to have the best punishment absorption storires.

I was surprised, too :-)

It was common wisdom among Luftwaffe pilots that the B-24 was much easier to kill than the B-17. I could speculate that's because the B-24 went down in a ball of flames while the B-17 just lost height until it hit the ground, but whatever caused the Luftwaffe's misconception - the B-24 was tougher than the B-17!

On the Navy side, there's a similar effect with the "Grumman Ironworks" planes and the great R-2800. If you look at the statistics, the one plane that really could take ack hits and keep flying was the harmless-looking Douglas SBD with its little R-1820 :-)
